Re: Rear Brake for On One Inbred?

Yes, a post mount caliper to IS frame mount is needed. This normally means you go up 20mm in disc size (so if you had a 160mm rear caliper, with the adaptor you will now need a 180mm disc. Look on Chain Reaction etc to see the plethora of adaptors available. Normally between £6 and £12. Then try to ...

Re: Winter Miles

FLV, there's a few groups go out around Leamington - the Bike Yard shop does some mid week and weekend rides, plus Mike Vaughans in Kenilworth does a Weds night ride I think. Kenilworth Wheelers do a Weds night from Cubbington, and Sat/Sun rides from Warwick Castle. I'm in Beausale if you ever want ...

Re: Klymit Sleeping mats

OK cheers. My gear set up is quite light at the moment - siltarp, topbag and hunka bivvy. The balloon bed is just a pain to inflate (10 minutes with warm hands, 15 with cold hands), and that's in a dry tent. I have a foam mat, but I find carrying it a pain as it doesn't fit my pack or drybag (but it...

Klymit Sleeping mats

I am looking at really light sleeping mats at the moment - a balloon bed sets the standard for lightness, but is a pain to inflate etc. Klymit mats seem quite light (their lightest is around 180grams, and packs down very small (coke can size). Does anyone have any experience of them? Are they tough ...

Topeak Seat Rack (QR Beamrack RX)

I'll offer this on here first before STW/ebay. I have a Topeak QR Beamrack RX for sale. It's been used for a 10 day LEJOG about 6 years ago and has since sat in the garage waiting to be used again. It clamps to the seat tube (diam 25 - 27.2mm) and still has the rubbery strap to hold any bits on. Wou...

Re: Bear Bones 200 ... FINISH TIMES

Good to see there was 5 minutes of dry riding in the 15 hours plus!

Nice footage, speeded up it looks quite exciting! I like the squeezing it all in the drybag at the start, a lot of gear seemed to go into a small bag - No pics of the overnight stop though? Or did you ride through the night?

Re: Weight weenyism

Going lightweight can just mean carrying less stuff. On the BB200, how much stuff did you bring back having never used it (including food)? Next time, leave it at home (unless it would be silly to leave it - 1st aid kit might fit into this category). Then, go through what you have left and remove ha...

Re: Are we *misunderstood ...

Anyway, these trail centre places, do they have bogs and rivers and climbs so steep you have to push up them, and a cake and coffee stop halfway round? I might give them a go! And yes, most people think that biking everywhere and sleeping out in the woods or under the stars is bonkers. Better that t...

Gairy, I only have one thing to say, and that is "bring waterproof boots". Everything else is easy, but cold wet feet makes it much harder !

Re: BB 200 ... and so it begins

Roy,
the boulderside by the youth hostel is a big ring climb isn't it? At least that's the gear my bike was in whilst I was pushing it. The rest of it is just keeping going - don't stop for more than 30 seconds unless you have only 1 gear, then it would appear that stopping doesn't happen at all!

Re: BB 200 ... and so it begins

Thanks to Dee and Stu for the food and the event. That must rank as the hardest ride I have ever done. My legs are strange things - they get to a state of tiredness (knackeredness/numbness) then it doesn't matter what my head says, they just stay at one pace. 211km and 5400m of climbing is quite tou...

Re: How is everyones BB200 prep going?

Nick, given that most of the ability to do something is in your head, and fitness only makes things easier, you must make the start line. You can at least say that you did the BB200, even if it took a while to do it. It's an easy route to cut short if you decide it's too much, but give it a go - you...

Re: How is everyones BB200 prep going?

That is bad luck Gairy - hope your back sorts itself out. General question over bikes - lots on here have rigid or hardtail 29ers. I have a 26er hardtail and a 26er 90mm travel FS - which would be a better bike for the Bear Bones? I want to go light and fast, so the hardtail is better for this, but ...

What badge have you got?

So I slept out in the woods last night under my new tarp and bivvy bag - bit of a practice run for the Bear Bones really. Anyway, all day yesterday and today I have had the mickey taken out of me by the other half - joined the cub scouts have you? What badge did you get last night (Bivvy badge?)? An...

Re: And they're off!

They all jacked it in. Aiden and Steve jacked it in as they found it too slow/hard and not enjoyable (not the race they were looking for). Still did 500 or 600 miles though so not shabby at all! Rob did likewise after 800 miles! I imagine the EWE will be back with a better, more enjoyable, faster, l...

What Lightweight Tarp?

OK, so I have a bivvy bag, a light sleeping bag, and now need a tarp. Sort of thing I am after is about 7x5 feet, and 200g and £50 (and green or dark colour). What are peoples recommendations, (I am happy with 2nd hand if anyone has something surplus)?

Depends how permanent / tidy you want it to be.

Could try painting it, or if you're not ready for that, then gaffer tape over it - that'll stop it getting worse and stop it rusting.

Rules are fine - certainly not elitist. Mountain Mayhem riders are typically not bike packer type riders, so do their opinions count? Yes, but only as much as you (who wrote your website) wants them to.

Re: Tim Woodcock's Coast to Coast

It's a great route - we took 3.5 days, and they were full days. First (half day) was St Bees to Wasdale Head (excellent riding), 2nd day to Kirkby Stephen (full day - 14 hours riding, but we did have to stop in Ambleside to fix a mechanical). Again, excellent riding, but the moor over Wet Sleddale w...
