Re: How many spare tubes do you carry?
One and a repair kit. I once managed to rip the valve off a tube by pumping too hard and had to repair the original punctured one. I now much prefer pumps that have a wee hose of some sort.

I left my van in the car park outside the Visitors Centre in Tyndrum when I went off for a night. There's tons of space.

Re: Any POSITIVE experiences of Alfine11 hubs?
I must have been extremely lucky when fitting mine as I just cut it roughly to length, fitted the wee cable-stop around the right place and used the adjusted on the gearshift to get the dots to line up.

Re: Any POSITIVE experiences of Alfine11 hubs?
I ran my Alfine as a 2x11 on the Fatbike this winter. That gave me a massive spread of gears, many below Shimanos recommended ratio. Mostly it's just fine. I got the very occasional unwanted downshift and I did have one ride when it was skipping between high and low ratios. However, it was a particu...

Re: TransPyr trip report
Gutted for you but a great write-up. I can certainly sympathise with some of your feelings about being away from family (regardless of how much you've looked forward to it) and the emotional turmoil of letting someone else do all the planning. When I did a charity LeJog I kept wanting to change the ...

Winter Kit List
I wrote up a list of what I've been carrying this winter. Some of it seems pretty old-school compared to the stuff I see on here mind

I plan on making a few changes for a bivvy this weekend.

Re: scotland trip
Well done. 50 miles a day for 10 days is pretty good going, especially given the weather we've been having (mostly that wind). I'd planned a ride up to the 3 Brethren this afternoon but turned back at the Minchmoor as it was too wet and increasingly cold. I reckon it was only 4-5 degrees at the summ...

Re: Bikepacking - where's it heading?
Can you explain what the differences in mindset are? I'm very interested in this thread because I am moving from cycle camping to bike packing. Now, there's obviously going to be some generalisations here and I imagine there'll be folk who disagree but here goes ;) 1/ The idea of lightweight and sm...

Re: Bikepacking - where's it heading?
Isn't bikepacking just a fancy name for off-road touring? Sometimes I agree but other times there seems to be massive differences. I've ridden with quite a few seasoned tourers (inc' off road) over the years and they're often very surprised when they go on a bikepacking trip. I think there's a diff...

Re: Bikepacking - where's it heading?
Isn't bikepacking just a fancy name for off-road touring? Folk have been doing that for years, it's just that the equipment has got a bit better. Modern materials & designs have helped of course. I think we're likely to see some more of that coupled with a bit more affordability if the market gr...

Another option would be the Revelate Viscacha. You can get them from backcountrybiking in Aviemore now too.

I had a look at the Aldi ones today. They are definitely "soft shell" and didn' t look to be any more than water-resistant. The pad is on a separate liner.

Is anyone really having problems inflating their bag orally or is this just about minimising moisture content?

The nearest thing to these I've seen previously were the Crikey, how much equivalent at somewhere around the £100 mark!
