What do you commute on?

Post by Ben98 »

OK, so I'm intrigued by what bike you all use to get to work/school everyday, I'm enjoying my cx atm but I'm considering getting a "nolobi" single speed for cycling to school and back, more due to simplicity and style than anything else :-)
But what do you commute on?

Specialised langster for the last 3 years, 20km round trip. It's now at the end of its life, so will be swapping over to my genesis equilibrium 853 at the end of the month. The salt in March pretty much finished everything but the frame off on the langster :(

I have a Langster, although just rebuilt with Nitto and stronglight, it's become a good fun training bike, and yes I run brakes on it ;)

Kona Honky inc. With Ragley Luxy bars and a Brooks saddle.
Comfy, sturdy bike picked up half price on ebay. Yay.
The grit and poo of my winter commuter route has eaten one drivetrain though not my rims as it has discbrakes.
Grubby little urchin.

Revolution courier bought for £85 in a sale seven years ago. RRP was £150 but it was a three year old model.

mix of different bikes:

decathlon btwin vitamin single speed - cheap and cheerful

cannondale r800 vintage road bike - bit of a bone shaker and not sure I should be taking it down farm tracks but it seems to hold up

dahon 26 inch wheel folding bike

Kinesis Crosslight Pro6 - Bonty SSR disc wheels (700c) with schwalbe durano plus. Flat bars and Shimano SLX Disc brakes.
1x9 setup using 46T front ring, 11-32T 9 speed cassette using 105 mech and SLX shifter (Gives me the same range of gears as having a standard compact double setup which I started off with a full 105 groupset and managed to wear it out after a winter of commuting so the 1x9 offers a lot less wear).

I swap between chains once a week to also try and reduce wear.

Mudgaurds used over winter.

Think that covers it.

I wanted something a bit different, I'm on a Charge Plug

I absolutely love it, the bull horn bars aren't to everyone's liking but they are bloody comfy

No bottle mounts on the frame so I've got a coffee cup mount on the bars, you get some strange looks when you sip a brew when waiting at the lights.
Wait for me...

My first MTB is now the all weather commuter - Dawes Tekarra steel framed gate. It's on it's 4th set of wheels, umpteenth drivetrain, seems to get all the hand me downs off the other bikes. Running 1x8 (how retro is that!!)
I reckon it's racked up about 30,000km in the last 13 years.

If the weathers OK (or I want to get to work quickly), then the road bike is used (which is actually most of the time). Ribble sportive - quite a nice bike; on it's 2nd set of wheels, 3rd drivetrain etc.

I don't actually like commuting in the car now - feel like a rat in a cage.
