Insect repellent

What's the best stuff that'll keep them mosquitoes at bay. I find that DEET is no longer works.

Avon skin so soft or smidge works for me.

Skin so Soft (Dry Oil Body Spray) isn't a repellent, though if you apply enough of it it can create a sticky barrier that smaller insects can't penetrate.

DEET should definitely work though.

Dee swears by Smidge and she's a magnet for biting things, especially Horse flies. She does reckon that you need to apply it everywhere, even places covered by clothing ... this may perhaps only relate to Horse flies though, as they'll bite (they actually cut not bite) through clothing.

DEET is nasty stuff and can breakdown some materials ... sleeping bag shell, waterproof coat, etc.

I usually decant some from the bigger bottles into a 15/20ml spray bottle. The smidge credit card size pocket thing seems like a lot of plastic.....

+1 for smidge. I'm one of those people that mozzies and midges would happily chew through two inches of solid oak to get at but Smidge seems to work very well. I still use DEET on occaion when abroad but hate using the stuff. Its hard to beleive that something that can melt plastic is safe to put on your skin and I really don't like the smell.

The MOD issues DEET based insect repellent. When the new L85 (SA80)individual weapon was introduced in the late 80’s squaddies were melting the stock onto their faces when wearing it!

Smidge is also excellent as a tick repellent. It's more or less mandatory for me as soon as Spring arrives as I'm a bit of a tick magnet. Having had Lyme Disease twice, I try to be extra careful these days

Good correction.
I am using Smidge mainly as a tick repellent first flying insect repellent second. In SW England Lyme is endemic whilst midges and mossies are a minor issue.

By insect borne disease I meant malaria or dengue etc.

I am sure the skin so soft formula thing is an urban myth. It still works for me and has the bonus of making my skin feel ohhh, so soft.

Smidge is the next step up. Great product for dealing with midges born North of Lancashire.
