I don't think a helmet would have been much use when that came down :shock:

In all the videos I've seen of landslip/rockfall there's been a few seconds "warning" when the material in the slip plane falls away then maybe five to fifteen seconds later you get the actual main fall. Not something you'd necessarily notice unless you were looking for it. That railway cutting will have been blasted so there's a lot of fracture planes hidden from sight, water gets in to them, freeze-thaw, then ...

There's a big rockfall due on a crag near Thirlmere. There's a crack at the top that is steadily widening behind a house sized lump of the crag. https://www.frcc.co.uk/wp-content/uploa ... 5-2016.pdf
