WRT route planning help
For last year’s WRT I joined a ride.
This year I want to try and sort my own route.
Would you guys be willing to sanity check my route ideas?

Yes, no problems. Your route seems fine to me. Carry on.Asposium wrote:For last year’s WRT I joined a ride.

Re: WRT route planning help
On a slightly more serious note, I'm sure someone posted up a link to a page/app that would plot a series of grid refs on Google maps or similar. Can anyone remember it?
Edit: found one - http://gridreferencefinder.com/ Copy and past the grid refs and work your way down the page with the last step being the "show on google maps"

Yep gridreferencefinder is the one.
I reckon that poring over maps for days on end is much more fun though. In fact, my belief is the actual event itself is merely a formality that has to be endured after all the armchair fun with the maps .
(Corking post there Mr Barter )

Re: WRT route planning help
It's more for an overview Reg, first thing when we get home tonight is to check we've all the maps. If not then there's an order going in!
We'll come up with a couple of possible routes, adjust to visit things of interest we've not been to before and adjust again to ensure some decent cafes are visited, then on the weekend just make it all up according to how we feel.

Yep, what's good is there's loads of ways of doing this aren't there - just what WRT is about. Gridreffinder is quite fun too to be honest .
I still sorely tempted by the blindfold-and-spin-me-round-and-round-then-go-thataway option...

Re: WRT route planning help
I tried to load that file into bikehike but it says it's an invalid route.

I loaded into Garmin basecampwhitestone wrote:I tried to load that file into bikehike but it says it's an invalid route.
Is a series of waypoints
Re: WRT route planning help
Total concur with you Reg, however I'm from the digital age and love to do the same with online maps, 'drag edit mode' on bikehike is a most splendid way to waste the most of AprilRIP wrote:I reckon that poring over maps for days on end is much more fun though. On the mapping front, http://www.gpxeditor.co.uk/ is good at displaying the gpx file, it actually lets you display multiple routes at once, very handy for comparing options....

I'm sure Barter told me that only he had the power to do this...

Wasn't listening by that point.
Re: WRT route planning help
Not being in possession of the relevant paper map, I've got most of in Basecamp as waypoints. Next job is to waypoint pubs.

Re: WRT route planning help
Some questions about the legal status of some tracks.
From Brithdir and running towards Bala there's the "Cross Britain Way", some of this is on road but is it legal by bike on the continuation?
The track heading north from Rhydymain to the upper part of the Mawddach is also marked with the "Other routes with public access" symbol, this is a BW in the northern part so presumably bikes are allowed on this?
So I suppose a general question is: are the tracks marked up with coloured circles (red on 1:50k and green on 1:25k) generally permissive bridleways?

Not always Bob but I generally accept them as such and have never had any problems. So I suppose a general question is: are the tracks marked up with coloured circles (red on 1:50k and green on 1:25k) generally permissive bridleways?
