I'm genuinely surprised that the Pipedream 400 has a comfort rating of -5. I know for a fact, at -5 I'd be uncomfortable in that.

I think the limit is -5 so comfort around 0 but I'm not entirely sure

Yep, Rich is indeed correct EN comfort (not lower / limit) of very nearly -5.

I’d be opting for a Cumulus Quilt Mick...

I’ve a 250 and it’s spotty Dog.

I have the Cumulus 350 quilt, and with a decent mat you could push it below freezing!
Still need to sort that night out, fella!!!

Alpkit do seem a bit conservative with their headline ratings - possibly splitting the difference between the comfort and limit ratings. Quite why choose a different figure from the standard though? Just makes comparisons between bags harder to do. It does depend on how warm/cold the OP sleeps though as to what is genuinely suitable.

Cath's got a Cumulus 350 and is plenty warm in it but we've not had a bivy out at -5C yet. It's rated to comfort of 2C and limit of -4C. As ever with quilts (and bags for that matter) a decent sleeping mat is essential to get the most out of them.

The OP asked about bags rather than quilts so: Cumulus sleeping bags are sold under the Criterion label in the UK. The Quantom 350 is under 700g and rated to -6C https://backcountry.scot/product/criter ... antum-350/ If you want to treat yourself then PHD have the Minim 400 at 670g https://www.phdesigns.co.uk/minim-400-down-sleeping-bag and if you are feeling really flush there's the K-series version at 585g https://www.phdesigns.co.uk/minim-400-d ... g-k-series

My personal opinion is that Cumulus/Criterion offer the best bang for buck, they just about about disprove the "light, cheap, quality: pick two" maxim.

I often take a Cumulus 350 below zero. Obviously it 'only' contains 350g of down rather than 400g ... but all the insulation is working, not just part / half of it. I know it's not as cur and dry as that but it's the general idea.
Quite why choose a different figure from the standard though?
They're still quoting EN figures Bob. In this case EN13537 Comfort -4.2˚C EN13537 Limit -10.8˚ EN13537 Extreme* -29.5

The headline figure is "-6C AK Sleep limit" then they quote the EN13537 figures. I've just watched their product video for the Pipedream series - the headline figures are to "keep most people comfortable down to -6C".

From the above quote I can see why they plump for such a figure but I think if you've are working to a standard then you should use it rather than come up with a value that doesn't bear any resemblance to figures used by other manufacturers. It's why EN13537 was developed in the first place! (rant over  )

With you - I thought you hadn't noticed the EN figures. You're right, a standard that isn't standard, simply isn't a standard

Cheers all lots to look at but I'm not convinced in a quilt tbh the criterion Whitestone linked to looked great but sold out. Will keep looking at options thanks
