Such a impressive rides (including Lael's)
I can't think its all down to new lighter kit, Mike's determination had to be the winning combo. He must've known he could do it from the start!
Go Mike

That is truly impressive. I was talking to someone who'd spoken to Mike shortly before he headed for the States, he said that Mike thought his fitness wasn't really where it needed to be

Bravo indeed. Can only imagine how happy he must be with a new record after the 2013 reroutes. Maybe just getting it all lined up so well and pushing hard counts for more. Either way, good work MH!

The John Metcalfe book goes on about doing any race in twice the time of the pros as a good bench mark, so that's two less days now thanks to Mike
And fair play to Mike, that's a grand effort
Good luck to those who are still on course

Quite amazing ride from Mike.
For a sense of scale, Greg still had ~ 900 miles to go when Mike finished this morning.

Excellent ride from Mike. There is a 3 minute interview with him on the Bikepackingmagazine website ( on phone and can't do links). He looks wrecked which is good of him after that effort.
Now waiting for the race for second and first s/s.
Maybe johnnystorm needs to consider a name change to johnnyslightbreeze. Turning back? ;-)

Perhaps I should!
Left Steamboat around 6am today unfortunately I seemed to have left my legs behind and have found it really hard going. Have detoured to Kremmling to get supplies before heading back towards Silverthorne.

Almost 2am in USA and johnnystorm still on the move to Silverthorne. There is a Wendy's there that may have 24 hour opening times.

Notice that young Terence has covered the distance but his marker has not started bouncing yet. Chris Plesko has less than 10 miles to go and will take something like 4 days off his own s/s record.

Spots are odd with the way they interact with trackleaders. I'm still 1km from the finish of the HT 550!
That despite putting out an ok message at the finish line.

They're gone before I get a chance! Just finished a chorizo and egg burrito in Cafe Dawn in Salida.
Great camping spot yesterday about halfway between Hartsel and Salida just before the pass.

Just seen on Twitter that Greg is out due to a ride-ending mechanical
No other details yet. Gutted for him.
