Anyone else a member of the RSF?
No it's not some para-military bikepacking cult, it's the Rough Stuff Fellowship. I've just had my new journal in the post, it's volume 57 number 1, so they've been in existance and flying the flag for 'off road touring' for 57 years!
Some of the old boys have been in from the start but that doesn't seem to slow them down or stop them from doing stupid things on loaded push bikes :D Think I might even be the youngest member

I didn't think they let join if you rode a bike with knobbly tyres?
Edit: for example - Doethie Valley anyone?

Just noticed that Rough Stuff Fellowship's area guides (lovely handwritten things) are now online as PDFs:

Previously it was members only and stamped addressed envelopes. May be a bit dated but could be useful.

Ah yes, the inventers of off road cycling (and not some bunch of hippies in Marin County contrary to popular belief). I'd be interested to see what there views are on the current gravel / adventure bike fad is.
Re: Anyone else a member of the RSF?
Just had a look at the guides. vaguely exciting. Half tempted to see if I can go new skool on one of their routes and make a GPX.
Re: Anyone else a member of the RSF?
Things have moved on a bit, I'm a joint leader the for the South lakes Group of the RSF. Recently on a 4" Fatbike!

yes, i am. been a member since 1985. and the ctc for my sins......
my 1st proper offroad ride was with the wakefield section of ctc, a circuit of Cutgate and Strines on my uncles old carlton corsair, in 1984.
a love of mud, pain and exploring seems to have stuck.

Cyclo cross days back to 1902 for the first official race (according to Wikipedia). Those rough stuff people obviously jumped on the band wagonhtrider wrote:Ah yes, the inventers of off road cycling (and not some bunch of hippies in Marin County contrary to popular belief). I remember when Singletrack magazine was good and they did an article on a group of rough staffers,. Great article but at the time it didn't appeal, but it seems most of my riding nowadays is close to the rough stuff but on a t rigid mountain bike

George Foster Fraser 'bikepacking' across central Asia in the 1890s. Great caption. Always wear a (pith) helmet.

haha really like some of the old photos mabe this should be made in to a film like the climbing one i co-produced which was based on the first fell and rock bouldering guide from 1916 https://vimeo.com/138468509. could do a similarly whimsical / light hearted thing with this haha.
