Here you go Blackhound. Me at the finish. Shortly after getting chased by a Bison and just before getting fed roast pheasant and veggie pasta and a posh belgian beer by a fellow rider's father who had just finished!

Might need to be careful with suggestions, don't want the ban hammer to be brought out!

We were flying down the hill from Holland Lake, and some local dudes with their pickup were parked there, they offered us a beer, so we stopped and had a beer. Next they asked if we wanted to shoot some guns. Why not!

Started with some puny pistol, and worked our way up to a 30-06 rifle and a 12 bore! Was so much fun! Highlight of Montana for sure. We spent maybe 30 mins there. Time well spent.

Traveling with Glen Carter in 2013 he told us that 90% of households in either Montana had guns from some checking he had done.

Yep, more gun owners in Montana than home owners.

Hence these guys nicknamed it "Mantana" and "Montucky". It was my favourite state though.

cheers for the link, interesting read. Particularly

"At one point I had 5 double cheeseburgers, 2 Red Bulls, 5 donuts, a burrito and orange juice in my backpack. That in addition to my feedbag, front roll and gas tank supply of food. Mentally I was happy and so was my stomach, at least for awhile."

I think I'd probably go that way too. I wouldn't mind dealing with the extra weight if it means that I know that there's no chance I'm going to go hungry.

Yeah, good advice. I started out early in the race carrying a couple of footlongs from subway. But after a week, the taste of subway sandwiches was making me gag. I then tackled Polvadera Mesa in New Mexico with 5 Cliff Bars and 2 Lara Bars and 2 Litres of water. Bad bad idea. Worst day of my life. 78 miles, 9000 feet of climbing. Took in the region of 14 hours I think. Bonk.

@MB - what were you doing for salt replenishment? I was putting away loads of electrolytes and had thick salt stains on my jersey. Can't imagine what the NM segment was like - it was hot in Albuquerque.

I got to ride with those 3 blokes in the picture at various times on day 1...good riding company.

The last two blokes (from the riders that left Banf on 12th June) are 20 miles from the finish.

Scott,

I was putting electrolyte tabs in my water bottle, which i drank whenever i stopped. Camelbak stayed pure water for hygene reasons. I also drank loads of gatorade. I didn't have tide marks on my jersey at all! I didn't sweat much considering in CO/NM I was probably drinking 10-15 L of fluids a day!!!
