Aaaaagh, good spot. The pedentry would never end thenmountainbaker wrote:Then the start and end tags wouldn't match. ERROR.Zippy wrote:Only if accompanied by <pedentry> to begin with...Fantasticmrmatt wrote:Would have been better really.</pedantry>

(And as the correct spelling is pedantry, I guess conversely no pedantry would have begun either...)

Re: Garmin UK ITT Maps - Any interest?
I'm still beavering away on this. It's turning into a saga.
I wanted to add the UK national cycle network to the maps. I downloaded the GPX traces from Openstreetmap and spent many late nights trying to change the geometries so that I could display the NCN as points on the map in a similar manner to OS maps (as I prefer this). I had some success but then decided to contact Sustrans direct. This took a while but today I signed some papers and they are sending me the up to date UK geometries direct which is ace.
I also had a problem with missing tracks from the OS data so decided to try and merge OS and Openstreetmap data and write a clever algorithm to fill the gaps. This proved hard I have not cracked it yet.
Then Ordnance Survey sent me a preview of their next free data set. It blows my vector data away and means I can render much more detailed map when this is available. In think it is due June/July.
Anyway. I think I can get a beta of the whole of the UK out in the next week or so if those kindly offering to host are still up for it? We can all have a play and I'll take lots of feedback ready for the release of the new OS data which should make them even better.

Cool, cheers for this work Dave. Even if the map rendering etc. is still a work in progress, the large data sets combined will deffo be usefuls at the very least.
I should also have an etrex 30 arriving tomorrow which is perfect timing
So fancy some testing

Re: Garmin UK ITT Maps - Any interest?
I'm really interested in these maps Dave. I know you looked at of you could render to memorymap which wasn't possible.
Does anyone know the cheapest device that would display these? Second would be fine. If not preferable

Re: Garmin UK ITT Maps - Any interest?
I now have a full UK version of these if anybody would like a copy.
The Garmin image file is 1.3GB in size so you will need to send me an SD card and an SAE. Please PM me first to check, I'm happy to do a few but if it gets out of hand I'll stop doing it. The maps work in Basecamp on MAC and Windows. I'll post instructions shortly on how to install them. But if anyone can host a file of 1.3Gb in size I'd be more than happy for them to be downloaded.
On the map you'll find:-
-UK roads, buildings, woods etc... using OS data
-UK paths/bridleways/byways using OSM data
-contour lines
-bothies (thanks Chew!!)
-taps (from OSM, not a brilliant data set at the moment)
-supermarkets
-"eating places"
-a lot of the NCN network
The POIs are all searchable so on the GPS you can look for the nearest bothy. I've not tested this in the field yet.
I have also burnt in the following ITT routes
-HTR550
-Cairngorm loop
-Borders 350
-Lakeland 200
-Penine Bridleway
-SDW
-Trans Cambrian Way
-Ridgeway
-Kielder and Cheviot
-EWE
The maps are in no way perfect. I have a github site where I will upload all of the raw data to and where anyone can suggest improvements. I'm sure there will be loads.
These maps have two advantages beyond the iOffer UK 1:50k OS maps. They look better at low zoom levels as they are vector based and they have more searchable data on them. I've been using them in the Swindon area and I like the render a lot. Others may hate it. There are some quirks, for example bothies show as cameras at the moment (see below), I need to work harder on the icons.

Anyway, sorry this took me an inordinate amount of time to do. I am really struggling for hours in the day at the moment.

Good work Dave.
I'd like to download a copy if possible. I don't use my Dropbox account and am happy to hold a copy there if it helps?

OK here is a link which will work until Dropbox bans me. I think it is good for 1-200 downloads
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/998 ... ukbpv1.img
This is the .IMG file to drop into your Garmin folder on the GPS. I will put a link up in the next few days with much better instructions and explanations. I really welcome all feedback and please be gentle as I've had to do a LOT of hacking to get this far.

ps. Can we keep it within this community for the time being, don't really want it shared widely elsewhere yet.

Re: Garmin UK ITT Maps - Any interest?
Great work Dave. I'll give them a try and give you any feedback. I've currently got the official OS maps on there, but they're preset to 1:50k, so will be interesting to see how I get on with these. I plan on doign the Cairngorm loop when everyone else is doing the HTR550, so that should give it a proper test out

Alright, uploading this onto a box at the moment. Will post a link when it's done later this evening. Internet connection in my flat has awful upload speeds though, so it won't be for a few hours.

Have you thought of using bittorrent? I don't use a Garmin but I'm happy to seed this for a while if a torrent goes up. It would share out the hosting bandwidth nicely.

Ok, file is up. I'll leave this up forever basically, and any new versions I'll just upload alongside it.

Make sure you disable any other maps on the device.
Also have you copied it into the GARMIN directory?

Stupid question Dave what do you mean by the "directory" . I've deleted my others maps for now.

Re: Garmin UK ITT Maps - Any interest?
You install the map by plugging your device into a computer using a usb cable. It will then appear as a drive and you copy the .img file to the GARMIN folder on that drive.

Re: Garmin UK ITT Maps - Any interest?
Quick question Dave (might be a bit silly as I haven't actually looked yet). But say I wanted to "pinch" a couple of the routes off it, and the POI files, can I just extract the .img and copy the appropriate files into the directory?Dave Barter wrote:New version coming out soon as I need to update a few of the routes.
