Clear Gorilla tape on frame?

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

Has anyone tried using it on their frame ... not to hold it together, just to help prevent bag rubbage?

Not sure, but I grabbed a roll of this whilst in Bradfords on Saturday getting paint mixed.

I've used some to replace the screen protector on my Garmin 800, works great. I will be using it on my frame too, but no idea how long it lasts with cables/bags rubbing...

I wrapped the Puffin in it the other week. Seems to last for years and keeps everything looking lovely.

(edit: it's available from the Wildcat Gear shop too, so I hear)

Edit #2: I mis-read the title. I was referring to helicopter tape, not gorilla tape...

I use vinyl self adhesive film on all my bikes - not as hard wearing as gorilla tape but a fraction of the cost and its been good enough to resist some serious frame bag / granite filled mud abrasion on Krampus, mukluk and fargo.

I use 3M copter tape on areas susceptible to cable rub etc. If the design allows I'll put it on the drive side chainstay too. I find for chainslap wrapping in amalgamating rubber table protects and keeps the noise down.

For temporary stuff, I.e. a couple of days, I use the decent 3M/scotch blue masking tape. Not the toughest stuff, but does the job for limited time I want it for and is super easy to come off with little/no residue.

I can confirm that clear Gorilla tape works very well. Thin enough that in conforms easily to the tube shape, doesn't leave an edge and completely clear once applied and rubbed down.
