First full day on the Old Chalk Way. A nice bivy near Evershot then a lot of up and down to get to Carne Abbas where I took possibly the worst photo ever of the giant 😀 Then lots more up and down to Blandford Forum before about 20km of easy flat riding before the climb up to Shaftesbury culminating in Gold Hill AKA the Hovis Hill which I managed to clean 👍

Lunch then nice lanes before one bitch of a hill(walked!) led 20km of fast slightly downhill farm gravel tracks along the escarpment edge. Met Faustas off the forum just near the end of this and had a chat.

Some nice climbing up onto Salisbury Plain, past Stonehenge. The range is live firing this weekend so diverted eastwards and am now sat in a pub :-bd before finding a bivy spot for the night.

8hr gravel bash today, in the warm (hot!) sun. Wanted to do a lot of hours of hard pedaling for some knee destruction testing. Right one fine, left one was aching a bit for a while but settled down for the last couple of hours.

I suspect I was mostly in zone 2 thanks to my spinny gear, with excursions into zone 3 and 4 on the climbs. The joy of singlespeed....

Are you planning on doing the whole shebang up the Icknield Way and then Pedders Way to Holme next the Sea...? If so, just note that Suffolk Council have shut some of the byways it uses, see https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roads-and-tr ... ion-orders

Which is a bit of a bugger, as that was the easy way to get to High Lodge for a rag around the trails. Having said that, someone I follow on Strava posted a ride where they went up and down them, so the closures don't seem to be stopping everyone. There's an easy enough diversion I can point you to if necessary...

It was a beautiful warm day, so took the opportunity to head out for some acclimatisation training for my upcoming Scotland trip. 30 miles around trails and back roads with a mammoth 771ft of climbing. That should do it.

Start of a weekend of riding with successful train connections and an excellent ride from Salisbury to Blandford. Old Shaftesbury drove track was a highlight, and as above, had the pleasure of meeting Bob and having a chat. First time I've met a forumite out in the wild! :-bd

Rest of the ride was beautiful and some really nice trails, and quite lumpy all in with 550m ascent in 32 miles. Some easier riding today out to the purbecks.

I rode a bike today

It's been almost 4 weeks since one of my spinal disks decided it didn't like being between the vertebrae, and would rather be in my spinal canal, causing havoc with the nerves. Amongst other things, it's been a serious wake up call for how far I can keep pushing myself before my body says 'enough'.

Anyway, I rode. 90 minutes, very gentle, mostly paved on my hardtail. It was lovely and probably easier than walking.

Booked into theatre tomorrow for a 'root nerve block' injection into the spine. If that's effective, I might even be able to limp around Jennride

I was coming on here to post about yesterday's speedy road ride, but that's way better! Congratulations on getting back in the saddle 😀

Me and my mate Glenn had planned this gravel type ride for the 24th. I think I mentioned to Ton and one of the John's but they must've been busy. Glenn came up from London yesterday to have a chilled day of cycling today. My aim was to take him up to Wessenden Head and let him witness the beauty of this very gorgeous part of the Peak District.

Image
After breakfast at mine, spirits were rather high. He had 45mm on a gravel bike and me on 33mm CX type tyres on a standard road bike. Main mission was to get to Wessenden Head, have ice cream and to just chill.

Image
It was all going well and we rode round the back of Castle Hill. Up my Everesting Climb (I obviously walked) and also tried to ride up the short and sharp cobbled section near Netherton, of which I slipped out the first time in many years.

Image
Got water at COOP and edged closer and closer to Wessenden. Then it happened, a dreaded tubeless puncture. His, not mine and though I was hopeful at first and tried to get him to keep moving, it was actually the rim tape that had failed.

Image
So he rightly decided to remove the valve and install a tube. But, he'd brought a Tufo type latex tube. Hmm, I did the right thing and offered up mine and made no comment of the nasty orange thing he'd bought. Good lad that he is.

Then quickly the valve on my tube broke as he pumped it up (we had to get an extension on, which I'd brought but had somehow misplaced my valve tool). So the Tufo it was, which is when he teller me it was actually an AliExpress version. Naturally as it blew (was pumped up rather) up inside the lovely gravel tyres he had installed specifically for Wessenden, the stupid thing deformed.

Some remained as thin as a snooker cue and other bits blew up the tyre to full proportions. I thought it best we remove and fully inflate the stupid crap, but to no avail. It was one nasty pile of cheap poo.

Image
So we came to terms that we'd not be seeing Wessenden afterall, and started walking. It was 1.7 miles to the station at Slaithwaite (pronounced Slawit, as I took the opportunity to teach him). Got the train into Huddersfield and salvaged the ride by walking across to Halfords.

He put a slime tube in (and told me how weird it felt as it seemed clumped up at one end or another) and we headed back in time for his train. Obviously having the Dixons ice cream enroute.

Image
One of my favourite views from near mine. It's when you come out of the Everesting climb and look on over at Castle Hill.

Image
Us reaching Slawit station and him putting on his best 'I'm exhausted' face. Though we never got to see Wessy, it did remind me how much off road and scenic fun could be had with the CX tyres. So later in the week I may head on over to Wessy myself. Secretly off course and hopefully my tubeless holds out.

Was great.

Late, short, local, windy but stayed dry - well up top anyway, and surprisingly even my feet.

Found another new bit of track, to connect and extend two other bits of track I'd already found.

Proper bogs and tussocks to warm the heart of any boner.

Revisited and fondly remembered two of last winter's bivvy spots.

Had promised to stay out till seven, got back early so had some spare time, so I had a pint in a beer garden.

Very nice.

Oh, and, didn't we use to have a thread for strange things we'd seen on our rides?

I saw one of them layzee spa jacuzzi on the mountain, middle of nowhere....

'Grand Old Dukes' grovel ride round the Trossachs. I managed not to sleep very much last night so I was somewhat bleary eyed at the start, not helped by horrific levels of midges. I met Paul AKA Dyffers at the start and envied his Jones loops instead of drops. At the finish I envied them even more!

The weather was more or less OK with sun at the start then varying levels of dreich coming and going in the afternoon. Some of the trails were a bit...feisty... but Stormy aced the lot, with me hanging on for dear life. No other single speeds observed but it got it done - 109 miles, 3700m of climbing, in 9hrs 25, I'll take that.

Amusingly, it was Kerry McPhee doing the checking in and starting. Paul asked here if here bike had dried out yet

I am now very tired. As I said to Paul at the start - "It's not the BB200" but still a fair day oot.

Nice one Phil. You're not the only one to mention the midges.
