Hello, long time lurker and seldom poster but wondering about buying either a new or second hand tracker, I've done some looking about but getting a little confused by the different companies offering contracts for tracking etc. Does anyone know of any online resource that explains everything from a novice level up to more nitty gritty level?

Many thanks

Some stuff on here. Plus if you search 'spot' or inreach' on the general banter section there is other stuff on subscriptions etc.

Not sure if this thread is still 'active', but I'm doing a few days of solo Munro-bagging mid-June and my better half is getting anxious that I'm going to throw myself down a gully and never be found again.

Does anyone have a tracker with subscription I can 'rent' from them for a couple of weeks? The period I need to use it for will be 9th to 15th June. I just need to be able to provide my family with a link, not associate with myself for an event.

If you go down the hire route, Track Trail seem pretty good - £45 for a week

I have a Track Trail InReach hired for four days next week and it's basically costing me £70. This includes the OS Maps upgrade so I can load GPX routes into the live tracking for my family to see, plus the (rather expensive) returns P&P label.
There are theories at the bottom of my jargon.

Would WhatsApp live location (and a decent power bank) not do it? We use it for work and it's pretty reliable, where you have data signal - which I guess is where it can become less useful in a deep valley.
I'd lend you mine, but need it myself from mid June. FWIW, my family find the findmespot tracking map hard to follow.

Kong (in Keswick) offer them - https://www.kongrunning.com/pages/hire/

Id be tempted to buy one looking at theses:
https://www.findmespot.com/en-gb/produc ... vice-plans

Only because I’d been looking down the Garmin rabbit hole until they changed their pricing plan.

Used track and trail for 2 weeks this May. Good service etc but cost £87 for the 2 weeks.

Spotravker had an offer on at the mo and their flex rate for an annual subscription allows you to turn them on and off again without a charge each time, unlike Garmin.

Just a thought.

Apparently from the 25th of this month Inreach subscriptions can also be suspended https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=n ... h6i2Sofee6

Aha, I was wondering when Garmin would see the errors of their ways!

You cojld always suspend or pay monthly
Not clear if they are maming ypubpay the yearly.acti ation fee...is that what they ha e stopped ?

Found it too expensivel personally snd use a motorolla defy which works out @ £50 per annum ( or £5 per month suspend when you ljke and no fees to re start ) .for sos and 5 x texts per montn ( tracking is £10 per month i think and can be added monthly but never bothered
Does need a working phone though
