Our feathers come from Chinese ducks farmed for their meat. We retrieve their feathers after they are culled. We keep the ducks death certificates

Honestly, I didn't know ducks were issued death certificates. It's a school day everyday

Cows are all registered at slaughter as they need to be traceable in case of disease, mad cow etc. But I don't think they get a death certificate as such.

Re: Is it only ducks?
I wonder if the only truly waterproof down comes from Bombay Ducks.

Matt has a theory that the very best down, must come from penguins.

I've not had Bombay duck in years.
Re: Is it only ducks?
My uncle introduced it to me 40 or so years ago but probably not had it in the last 30 years. You can get it from specialty importers but it's not cheap (6.99 for 100g!).

Eider ducks I heard.Bearbonesnorm wrote: ↑Thu Dec 03, 2020 3:02 pm Matt has a theory that the very best down, must come from penguins.
Penguins must have a puffy down, but also have blubber for isolation, which makes for a messy and smelly sleeping bag insulation.

Speaking of smelly and messy, scientists are now using satellite images to track penguins in Antarctica. They create so much poop that it shows up as gigantic brown smears against the white snow.
Re: Is it only ducks?
Many fascinating ways to be read about how they (emperors in the Antarctic) not just survive but strive in such an environment. The systematic huddling, rocking on their heels, breeding, capillary system etc.
What also fascinated me a bunch of years ago, reading about the Ig Nobel prize:

Reminds me of an ice climbing trip, where a friend had to poo very, very urgently. She had to hang from the harness.
She had to clean my rope too...

Re: Is it only ducks?
Friend of mine was lucky enough to head south with the British Antarctic Survey including an over winter. iirc he was there to keep the base running but as an off shoot spent a lot of time studying the Penguins roundabout.
Apparently the “fascination” wore off in a matter of days regarding our waddling friends. He’s now quite happy to never see another Penguin for the rest of his days.
Anyway, I though pretty much all meat entering the food chain required (or should have) a certificate of death as part of the documentation trail.
