Where's Norm - the grid square guessing game.
Thought we'd maybe have a new game this year ... I shall post 3 pictures all taken from within a single grid square and I will furnish you with the OS Explorer map number and 2 digits of the 4 digit regerence. From those clues, your challenge is to try and identify which grid square the pictures were taken. Not easy but there will be prizes on offer for anyone getting it right.
I'll aim to put a new square up every fortnight until we're completely bored of it and fed up.
Okay then, here's the first 3 pictures all taken from within a single grid square. The map reference is 200 and the square is SN8X6X ... you 'just' need to replace the X with the missing numbers relating to the grid square.
Have as many guesses as you like but please make it one per post so I can try and keep track of the answers.

Good game! Helps if you live there of course :). If we're completely useless at it, maybe after a time interval you could add a teensy clue such as 'facing W', and again until someone finally twigs it?

The need for additional clues had crossed my mind Reg I also thought it might make a useful(ish) reference of potentially interesting places people may like to visit in the future?

No I'm wrong. The third pic doesn't fit. It helps if there's a structure or an obvious 'feature' like in pic 2, but... hmmm....
Maybe this is like hide and seek: "you're getting warmer" .

It had struck me that you guys, 'Routes, are at a minor disadvantage with this one .
Anyway, Barter's gonna win this every time 'cos he's probably got some extremely clever bit of software that can scan the photo and rapidly compare it with the map!
I've soon discovered that this is a massively frustrating, and addictive, game too. "I know.. it's.. you know.. bugger... tip of the tongue... I've bloody well been there... yes it's... no, blast, it isn't is it... no, hang on...etc etc etc".

LOL - it's only 10,000 Sq Km after all (though SN has a fair proportion of sea).
I thought the 4 white stones in that wall might be some sort of marker.

Okay, after some deliberation, I realise that this is nearly impossible so I've changed the rules ... see above.

Eh? Can't see any new rules? This game really is absolutely infuriating. I wish I had some hair to pull out .

Slightly too easy now
SN8760, the old mineworking at 874606

8760 ... YES, Reg wins.
Now, was that too easy? Do I need to make the clues more subtle. Are we fed up already?

Blimey - 2 minutes and Bob would've pipped me there. Possibly slightly too easy now, although I nearly killed meself dashing downstairs to get old Landranger 147 cos I don't have Exp200.
Nope not fed up - probably because I'm a sad old git with nowt better to do on a Sunday evening .

I was being too clever in sorting out the full GR for the mineworking.RIP wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2020 7:50 pm Blimey - 2 minutes and Bob would've pipped me there. Possibly slightly too easy now, although I nearly killed meself dashing downstairs to get old Landranger 147 cos I don't have Exp200.

Well done everyone. I think what we'll try next time is using one number and XXX and see how we get on - yeah?

I've just checked to see if there's another way of cheating - luckily google thinks it's either Scotland or Saudi

Re: Where's Norm - the grid square guessing game.
Bad luck Dave - cunning is our Stu .
One number and xxx, yeah why not. How about that square near Goole or wherever it is, the official 'most featureless' one. I'll get me coat...
This evening's entertainment has absolutely wrecked me. I've feel like I've just suffered an hour of Grade 5 Tussock Yomping in a rainstorm while blindfolded pushing a loaded bike. Nice one Stu .

At the risk of further chaos, could you nominate a person to provide that weeks grid square for a bit of the old geographical diversity?

Re: Where's Norm - the grid square guessing game.
Maybe the previous go's lucky winner?
Latecomers to the party won't have seen how horrendously difficult the original rules were since Stu's overwritten them .
PS You've been Here long enough Phil to know that 'further chaos' is never a risk - it's a 100% certainty .

Re: Where's Norm - the grid square guessing game.
Hmm, if the winner gets to pick the square it may end up still in Wales ad infinitum..... Whatever, any excuse to look at maps so however the format pans out, I'm in!
