Re: Southwest routes
Just recently did a two nighter from Taunton up through the Quantocks. Then headed due west across Exemoor to Barnstaple. From there I picked up the Tarka trail and NR 27 to drop down to Oakhampton and Dartmoor. I didn't go south to Plymouth but went south east along the Upper Teign valley towards E...

Re: Is the Southern Upland Way rideable?
Thanks.
Probably give it a miss. I just spent 3 days porridge surfing in the Quantocks, Exmoor and Dartmoor and am hankering for some firm smooth riding trails.

Is the Southern Upland Way rideable?
Is the long distance path across the bottom Scotland rideable as a bikepacking route?
Wanting some ideas for a spring trip.
I'm not averse to knee deep clag or long distance pushing if it buys a good journey overall

I love my Schwalbe G Ones at 40mm and 30mm. They won the 3 Peaks cross race this year as well.

EE standard Enigma. Works fine for me at 6'2" and I can tuck in fairly well.
Got stung for the full customs on delivery though which hikes the price pretty high.

MT91 +/- gaiters +/- seal skin socks depending on depth of crud expected.
Considering 45NRTH Japanthers when my MT91 die but they keep on living and are about 7 years old now. Pretty good going.

Re: What "big" 29 tyre for a 40mm rim?
Just went on my first overnighter on Dartmoor with 29x3 Surly Dirt Wizards. Just the thing for winter slop. Very grippy and not too bad on the road (everything is relative!). Have been using Chronicles at other times and rate them highly as an all rounder. They just lack a little bite in the gloop. ...

Re: Hub dynamo switch. USB or light selector.
Thanks for that. Didn't know Igaro made a switch. Unfortunately it's not compatible with my older charger. Emailed Igaro this morning and they got back pretty soon. I can jury bicycle the switch to my charger by soldering on a power lead/ socket which are sold for a few quid for the newer chargers. ...

Hub dynamo switch. USB or light selector.
I have an Igaro USB charger and a Super Nova E3 Triple wired to a hub dynamo via a set of piggyback spade connectors. I can't get full output from the light even with nothing plugged into the USB charger. I want to bicycle up a switch similar to the K-Lite bar mounted switch to overcome this. I can ...

Re: Any experiences of the Garmin eTrex Touch 35
I tried to use an Oregon 650 as a bike GPS with disappointing results. The touchscreen did not like rain at all and had to be shut down when anything more than drizzle was encountered which in Devon is most days. Screen not so hot with gloves either. Compared to an Edge it was a let down. Chewed thr...

ICELAND Not far by plane. Gob smackingly beautiful in a desolate Mordor sort of a way. Can be as adventurous/dangerous (think armpit deep river crossings days from anywhere) or as laid back (gravel roads/sight seeing) as you want. You're allowed to camp anywhere. Volcanoes. Geysers. Puffins. You wil...

Moved to one from a Katadyn Hiker this year. Though not as quick and easy to use as the much heavier/bulkier Katadyn unit the Trail Shot has proven to be great for single person use on short duration trips in the U.K. Beware of using the Trail Shot in far flung places though as it does not protect a...

Exeter to Haldon cafe is essentially a road ride any way you do it. At least till you get into Haldon itself and can hit the forest trails. Try going from the river path in Exeter through Alphington (busy urban roads) to Shillingford and Clapham before heading up the hill on quiet lanes. It's pretty...

Alternative to Tyvek
Have been working on getting a light shelter set up this year and have been using a Tyvek ground sheet as part of the system. I'm not happy with it. It's bloody crinkly and noisy for a start and more importantly it's too bloody slippery by far. On anything other than a perfectly level pitch it's lik...

Re: Bladder for frame bag
I sometimes use an MSR Dromedary in an Alpkit frame bag on my Krampus. The frame bag was made with a divider at the top and takes 3L of water easily. I don't have trouble getting the last drops out and a quick opening of the zip shows how much is left. My water filter attaches directly to the drinki...

Re: Folding bike packing
I've used my Birdy-Rohloff to do some camping trips. Rudimentary suspension and larger than average wheel size for a folder works well on less technical off road. I'd try to keep the weight low on a small wheel folder as they are a little less stable than a full size bike. Dare I say the pannier wor...

Re: The kit's got lighter ... but are we still touring?
Interesting points. I used to call it off road touring when I used panniers and bikepacking now because everyone else does,. My mindset is no different. I crossed Iceland a number of times on a 26er with 2.1in tyres and 4 small panniers. I never found my kit stopping me, I probably just had to push ...

Tarp tent advice
Trying to decide on a tarp tent for year round UK use. I've had a TNF Mt Marathon tent forever it's 1.5kg, I'd like to be sub 1kg this time. Don't want to tarp only or use a hooped bivi. I Ike a bit more shelter in the rain. On my radar are RAB/Integral Element Solo, DD Superlight Tarp Tent or Six M...

That's true. But you'd need to buy 2 SONs because they don't convert between dropout standards. At least mine doesn't but it's an old Klassic.
