Re: 9AM Route inspiration.

After discussion with the wife I have decided to start on Tue 10 April. I am now thinking I will do the route over 3 days and then decide whether to return home or extend the trip. The reasons for doing it over 3 days are that I have found out that the West Highland Way is 96 miles long and I want t...

Forgot to mention, I will post when I have decided when i'm going and I am happy for people to join me even if it's just for the West Highland Way.

9AM Route inspiration.

I have recently been trying to decide as to what my first major bikepacking route will be (I have toured off road before but not lightweight) and this morning at exactly 9 am whilst on my first coffee it hit me  . As I live in Edinburgh I have decided to take the Union canal to Falkirk, pick u...

Re: The post man's been ...

Recieved today, one Karrimor down jacket (£40 from field and trek), one terra nova comp 1 tarp (also £40 from field and trek). Yesterday I got 2 alpkit drybags and a Scottish silkworm bag liner. Now all I need to do is finish sewing (by hand  ) my myog frame bag. Then it's off to the Pentlands ...

Re: MYOG stoves questions?

Well if the fair weather bikers who drive around Edinburgh in the summer are anything to go by then shorts and a tee will be fine, but only if worn with designer trainers. ;)

Re: MYOG stoves questions?

Well, sods law also states that, on this occasion you would not be suitabley protected in the politically correct health and safety type attire, which you do of course wear, as a matter of course, on every other occasion when you are playing around in your shed with things that your mother probably ...

Re: MYOG stoves questions?

Thanks Stu, I read your blog but I really do want to make my own. I've seen an aluminium drinks bottle that has a long neck compared to other bottles so was thinking of using that to make one similar to the one you made. I think it would double the fuel capacity to that of a normal shape bottle. PS....

MYOG stoves questions?

How do you make a meths stove that will burn longer with less heat? I want a cooker to simmer on rather than boil rapidly. Does the size of the chamber in which the meths vapourises make a difference, i'm thinking big chamber=less pressure=smaller flame. Is this right? Also, what effect does alterin...

Re: Anyone experimented with crank lengths?

Well it was that time when you need to replace cassette and rings so I bought a new 170mm crankset , fitted it and went for a ride. Did I notice any difference? Well if you concentrate on it then yes I noticed it is slightly easier to spin up to speed but apart from that, not really. The bike lost a...

Today I got a Vango Venom 400 sleeping bag (they had sold out of the 300), Alpkit Hunka bivi bag and a new back wheel (well that was yesterday actually and I had not planned on buying it but something has gone wrong with my other back wheel so it needs to go for repair  ) Next pay day it's a do...

Re: Experience of rigid 69er conversions anyone?

Well I like the look of mine, just quirky enough to be different, in fact I have now began calling her "Ingrid", a rare occurence for me. The only other bikes I have ever named were my Dawes MTB tandem, Talulla (what a hoot) and my hand built Dave Yates, Doris (now sadley demised). Does th...

I read "The man who cycled the world" a while ago, an amazing feat and what determination that man has, certainly not for me, I need time to take things in, enjoy the scenery etc. Takes all sorts i suppose. Good luck to them all.

Re: OS getamap ?

I've used getamap 3 times. I got 3 seperate 1:50,000 A4 map sections for £1 each otherwise I would have had to buy 3 full maps that I probably would never use again so worth it on these occasions.

Newbie question, what do you do for water?

What do you guys do for your water needs, do you carry filters, boil it, use chemicals? I need advice as I always used to carry enough water in for my needs but now i'm going lightweight this won't be an option. If you use filters can you recomend one that doesn't cost the earth?
