Re: Gorse proof gloves anyone?

I've got ice climbing, well mixed climbing, gloves that have thin strips of kevlar(?) along the back of the fingers and knuckles. I have used them for biking. Another option might be slalom skiing gloves, again armoured along the back - in this case to bash the poles out of the way!

Re: Crank Compatibility

I see. I assumed the Q-Factor was controlled by the length of the spindle, but you're saying the crank arm would be shaped differently too? Tedious. Means virtually no chance of finding one (obviously lots of roadies use them, very few MTBers). The Q-factor is the distance between the pedal attachm...

Re: Crank Compatibility

Road and MTB cranks have different Q-factors (168mm vs 146mm) so you won't be able to stick an Ultegra crank arm based power meter onto an XT spindle. The arm will fit the splines on the spindle but will foul the chainstays.

POI: The "Q" stands for "Quack"!

Re: Garmin oregon 600 info req

I had a look on my Oregon. There's no .typ file but a bit of googling suggests that the file may be inside the various map files, the .img files.

A further bit of searching and I found https://www.pinns.co.uk/osm/typ.html. I've not tried it so "user beware" etc.

Re: Garmin oregon 600 info req

Not as far as I know. You can only change the colour.

I haven’t seen any Garmin that lets you edit the track line in any way. A real pain as no matter what colour you choose it will always clash with the colour of something on the map

Re: Maybe a daft question about tarps/tents and quilts

I forgot to mention. I've also got an ultra-lightweight Borah Bivy that has a DCF base. This isn't as big as the standard model, it's more like a standard bivy in size. I'd check out Borah's site for their sizing - they measure the bags in "girth" rather than width but girth is just twice ...

Re: Maybe a daft question about tarps/tents and quilts

I’m with Sean on this. We’ve a couple of Borah Gear ultra light bivy bags for just this purpose. They are big enough to get a 7cm deep inflatable mattress, quilt and a person inside. They definitely aren’t waterproof though. 170g or thereabouts. We bought directly from the States but I think someone...

John Climber did a walk through of using one of these. It's probably a couple of years ago now.

We've got one of the Ebay/Amazon versions. Works fine though for safety I do the filling outdoors.

https://youtu.be/R8GoL8UzIj0?si=UOOtu41UHs_bNyJG I don't fancy descending Pen-y-Pass on 23s in the snow. During the 1990s I lived in N. Wales and the loop of the Snowdon massif was one of my regular rides. I usually rode it anticlockwise so the descent of Llanberis Pass was near the end. On...

Re: Navigation system for techno numpty recommendations

As Phil notes, they all have their foibles and "WTF does it do that?" type moments. It ends up being a mixture of what you are used to and whether your mind works in roughly the same way as the unit's designers. I'm developing a system at the moment and beta user responses have varied from...

I've been at six (possibly five) to do for about ten years now. Why the possibly? I'm pretty sure that I've visited Tarn Crag above Easedale but never marked it as such in my guides. There's a lot of "fillers", minor prominences on ridges that sort of thing, equally some of the lower fells...

It always seems that a good midge year is a poor Horse Fly year and vice versa ... while not much of a fan of either, I know which I dislike most. Not had too many midges while over at my brother's in the Lakes but the clegs have been pretty bad - I'm getting bitten several times a day. Re: Longshot - Studded Tyres

Have you looked for "studdable" tyres? Though I think that any tyre with aggressive enough lugs should be able to take studs. When we were in Norway a few years ago for the Fat Viking the conditions were really icy and the race organiser bought about a thousand studs for entrants to add to...

Re: tyre Sealant

Sealant tends to dry out quicker in hotter weather. Not sure if any brand is better than another as I've always used used Stans. Also higher pressure gives less time for the sealant to work as it passes through the tyre. I always thought that gravel tyre pressures were about the top end of what was ...

I remember a story about the "press" demonstration journey of the ATP. Basically journos of the time were known to imbibe on a regular basis and were pissed as newts on the train. Consequently they all got "sea sick" and blamed it on the train.

Worth getting hold of a mech hanger alignment tool. The hanger might look straight but could be subtly out. It's a bit like trying to build a house without ensuring that the foundations aren't dodgy.

Re: Fatbike 1x11 drive train

I missed the 2x9 bit. You might need to swap out the chainset to get a better chainline. That needs some digging around to find the offsets (from the centre line of the bike) of the current chainrings and what the ideal offset for a 1x should be. I'm used to Shimano with HT2 bottom bracket an...

Re: Fatbike 1x11 drive train

Any derailleur and cassette will do (the splines need to be compatible). You’ll need a new shifter as well plus might as well get new cable and outer. Unless the chainring is shot you shouldn’t need one of those.

Thinking a bit more about this. Maybe better to push against the hatred part rather than the cyclist bit.

As Phil notes, playing the logic card doesn’t really work as you are battling against a raw emotion.
