Re: Excitement jitters!

Just got home. That was flippin brill! About 300km, 4000m, a night on the top of the Downs and a swim in a river.
I'm far, far to tired to learn how to post pics right now.

Excitement jitters!

I'm just eating breakfast (omelette, mushrooms and bagels ๐Ÿ˜‹) before riding out on a big 2 day loop of the South Downs and North Downs and I'm actually shaking with excitement! It's making it hard to keep food on my fork ๐Ÿ˜‚

Gets under your skin doesn't it.

Last Sunday I had a smashing day out. Left the house at 2.30am, slept out in the open for a couple of hours just because I could, then rode 136miles including carrying my loaded bike up a zig zag path on the White Cliffs of Dover. I met a group of pretty feral locals down by the shoreline and approa...

Re: BB200 2020

I've hatched a plan to do a 200km local loop this Sunday to see what it feels like. Unless it takes you from just after midnight on Saturday to just before midnight Sunday you've made your local 200km loop to easy  Remember to include an uphill push where despite the gradient the water seems ...

Re: What sleeping pad /mat?

Based on the advice from this forum I bought an Exped Synmat. First impressions on the living room floor are favourable. Non slip, quiet, clever pump bag thingy and a super toasty colour scheme!
I went for a non tapered model as I'm a wriggler.

Re: BB200 2020

Very excited about this announcement! It feels like a really accessible way to dip my toe in the water.
I've hatched a plan to do a 200km local loop this Sunday to see what it feels like. It's my 46th birthday the next day. Perfectly timed mid life crisis I reckon. ๐Ÿ˜†

Re: Brake Bleeding. Is it as easy as sounds?

Don't use fork oil! I speak from experience. Just a few weeks ago I was bleeding a rear shimano slx brake and accidentally picked up the bottle of fork oil rather than brake oil. Spent about an hour trying to force oil into the system. The tube from the syringe blew off the nipple twice shooting oil...

Re: OMG! The faff!

I wavered about whether to drive or ride to the Downs (1 or 4hrs respectively). I hate driving to ride, much prefer setting out from home. I was swayed by the fact I was knackered after a tough day at work, (I work outside), and the worry that not taking a sleeping bag was a seriously daft idea. I u...

Rehydrating food with cold water.

I know I could just try this but I'd be an expensive experiment if it didn't work. I've been using Expedition foods dehydrated meals and really like them. They say on the pack that you can use cold water but it takes longer. Any experience of this and any recommendations for brands/meals that work w...

OMG! The faff!

I've so much to learn. Slept out on the South Downs last night intending on putting in two hard days riding. Was experimenting with new ideas so slept near my van which contained backup equipment. 1st stupid idea: Just sleep in a down jacket and tights. Lasted about ten minutes before deciding this ...

Re: Anyone else get the 'Can't be arsed' feeling?

Weirdly I have far more can't be arsed moments when it's hot and sunny than during the rest of the year. Maybe it's the extra challenge that wild weather brings but probably it's just that heat sucks the energy out of you. I've shelved plans for a big ride tomorrow and am heading out at dawn to fly ...

Re: Down vs synthetic and other newbie questions.

Ha! Brilliant! Thank you! My wallet is clamping shut like a scared bivalve so very glad for the put an item of clothing between your mat and groundsheet suggestion to try first. Sleeping in a fluffy down cloud or whatever it was does sound rather attractive though. If I'm going to offer round doughn...

Down vs synthetic and other newbie questions.

Be gentle with me, I'm new here. Have ridden my whole life and love off-road riding and racing. I've done a tiny bit of bikepacking/touring over the years but this year due to a dearth of mtb racing I've focused my energies on bigger, lone adventures. Have done about 6 overnighters this year now and...
