Re: Recommend me a quilt

Bar stewards.

I have Thermarest Vesper 32 in long, bit more expensive these days than when I bought it, but can be had from places like Facewest and Ultralightoutdoorgear that are decent to deal with. Let me know and I can take some real-world measurements but I've been happy with it at 6'2"

Re: Lightweight touring rack | Tailfin? Other alternatives?

Not sure on the ETA but Ortlieb are releasing an axle mount kit for their quick racks ala Tailfin (but still a fraction of the price):

Re: Gravel Bike Tyres

There's a Cinturato 'Adventure' which I'm tempted to try. Can be had for ~£35 and looks to be between the M and the H in terms of tread, but 60TPI and ~100g heavier (burlier?)

Re: Which half frame bag?

I actually think the frame bags are the one Tailfin product that are quite keenly priced - £100-125 depending on size is about the going rate for most brands

Re: Shimano Cues

It’s a 105 front and rear mech and the shifters are non-series (I don’t think they introduced 105 hydraulic brifter’s until the year after) Not familiar with Cues, but assuming it's essentially an MTB chainset then a road front mech might not shift too well because the chainrings will be +5mm furth...

I've done an entire tent with McNett seam sealer (the stuff in a tube), mixed with a little bit of white spirit until it is just thin enough to put on with a brush

Biketart and Merlin are also good for rotors

Re: packable fleece?

I bought a Montane 'Protium' gridded fleece from Sport Pursuit recently, 230g in large with a hood. They do loads of versions (hood, no hood, full zip, quarter zip etc), SportsShoes usually have them going cheap as well if SP don't have your size left. As you say, if you want anything much thicker t...

Re: Fitting tight tyres

Spooky. For the first time ever I was also about to give up on a set of tyres that I couldn't get on. Saw this thread...I was always told to start at the valve hole and finish opposite :???: Went on easy starting opposite the valve. My life has been a lie.

Re: Decent lock for bikepacking

Just got to make peace with the fact that if someone is tooled up then nothing short of a hefty D lock and chain will slow them down anyway For actually locking my bike to something I'm just aiming to stop someone with a set of hand snips or yanking the bike, I reckon a Kryptonite cable and padlock ...

Artura Esker Trail Trousers cheap sizes M and L. I have just received M and they are perfect fit for me 186cm 91kg and 33-34inch waist. I might even order another pair. They will do the job for bikepacking, commuting, camping. https://amzn.eu/d/arj44qX As much as I detest Amazon these are now <£25....

FS: Vango tent - £10!

Found this lurking in the cupboard, a 'Vango Force Ten Vitesse 200' single skin tent. I think it's over 10 years old but has hardly been used - seam sealing is still intact and zips are working fine. Meant to house 2 but 1 is more realistic if you're using the included poles as they go on the inside...

Re: Tiagra cassette range question

I run an 11-40 10sp MTB cassette using a 4700 Tiagra mech and a GRX 46/30 chainset, so near enough your exact set up. If I remember correctly it worked fine without, but I still got a cheapo extender to be safe. All on my touring bike so been used fairly extensively without a hitch, I concluded it w...

Re: Sawyer mini filter - not used in a while...

is there any reason I can't continue to use it? Does it still work? I left my mine for a similar amount of time and could no longer get water to flow through it  Yeah it still seems to work fine. I'm just not sure if there's perhaps some bacteria inside it that I can't see! Apparently running...

Mountain Equipment Approach trousers for me. Mainly because I had already had a pair, but they are lightweight and don't look too Bear Grylls-y

Re: Tailfin Aeropack

I don't think the price is actually that bad for the alloy version. What puts me off is how high up the weight would be, I wouldn't want too much weight in one - in which case a saddle bag or literally any cheap rack with a dry bag on top would do the same job. Their mini panniers do look good though.

Re: new touring gears ???

For loaded touring I use any old 2x MTB kit, currently: XT 40/28 front, Deore 11-40 rear with an SLX mech (10 speed) Shifting is from Dura Ace bar end friction shifters mounted on some thumb adapters from SJS Reliable and low. That said I'd also have no qualms touring with Di2 if ease of shifting wa...

I have some HT2 XT cranks in the garage, used to be a triple so a single ring can go on the middle tabs.

Bit scuffed but that's it, £20 posted? Can get some pics tomorrow, fairly sure they're 175mm (and silver)
