Re: Way OT - inflatable canoe/kayak
I've seen an earlier version of this being used by a couple with a toddler in Croatia. They were using it to paddle along the coast away from the town to quieter beaches. I had a good look at it then and it appeared to be well made with a reasonable carrying capacity. also had a look at one in shop ...

Re: Treespotting
Just in case you didn't know, hollow trees are very important bat roosting sites. Though that particular tree is probably a bit too far gone to be as useful as it could be. Have a read of: https://cdn.bats.org.uk/pdf/Bats-Trees.pdf?mtime=20181101151317&focal=none I was out for a walk the other d...

Re: European travel planning ?
Not used them but Flixbus started to put a bike rack on various services. Was thinking about them as an option in 2019 for the 2020 tour, which for one reason or another didn't go ahead. Verena, back when I was a youngster I used to go to the alps, climbing, but always with a more seasoned/ex...

Re: Off topic - loading a kayak on a car
I use a similar system to Hamish ^, except I use doormats with a rubberised base and carpet like top. One point to note, be careful if it is windy. I was once loading an old Snipe GP kayak on to the roof (at Achmelvich Bay) and when I bent down to pick up the rope I was using the kayak took off down...

Before I decided that I was really quite happy with bar end shifters I did look at these: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/gear-spares/paul-mountain-thumbies-bar-end-gear-lever-shifter-mounts-318-mm-band-on-shimano-version-black/ But the cost :o A few years back I got something similar (but significantly...

'tis One Man's Wilderness by Sam Keith / Richard Proenneke.... For Chris and Stu Yukon Solo by Karal Dohnal may be of interest to you both. It's about one mans trip down the Yukon in a Open canoe. Took a couple of months if I remember correctly. I enjoyed it at the time but I did read it about 30 y...

@ Jameso I was in my local Decathlon yesterday and spotted these: https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/cliff-men-s-3-4-climb-pants/_/R-p-110325 They only had one pair left on the sale rail which were too small for me otherwise I would have bought them. They are cotton with a bit of stretch, with a gusset i...

I've been usin a Petzl Tikkina for years. Great for general use, eg, garden in dark, bothies, campsites and so on. About £20. Three AAA batteries...Pretty light with a good quality headstrap. Probably OK for dog walking, maybe not so good for running or biking if she's into that sort of thing!

21st Feb - 79.1
2nd March - 79.5
Disapointed, but was away all week and eating too much of the wrong food. Can't see much change for Friday either!
Still maybe once I get back into a routine things will improve. And get back out on the bike too, still a mud fest here.

My wife has this for use inside a mixte frame. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vaude-Cruiser-Bag/dp/B00HHZUM7M I've used it a couple of times and it's ok for what we paid for it £20 or less iirc. It's not to the same standard as say Revelate but does the job for her bits and bobs on day trips including a f...

My tourer is my gravel bike! In my case it's a 2016 Kona Sutra with either the original Clement MSO or WTB Nano's. 3x9, bar end shifters and slightly flared bars. Maybe a bit heavier than more modern designs of graadventourer, but I'm not going anywhere fast. Before I had this my previous gradventou...

Re: Do you own an unsuitable bike?
Like John Climber I too have a Mango singlespeed (don't ask), however when I lived over on the Great Plain I did use it for a bikepacking trip, twice. On the flatness of the great plain it was perfectly OK and even took in a couple of dirt roads, still flat though and thankfully dry. Now, my wife ha...

Re: Do you own an unsuitable bike?
A Raleigh Chopper would be utterly awful for bikepacking if anyone has one, glad I tried out a mate 's refurbished MK II a few years ago as put me right off buying one I owned a few that I was renovating waaay back when and they are definitely a great example of form over function - look great fun,...

Supernova rear light fitted to the Longitude today. Came with a seatpost clamp which would be fine and dandy if I was not using a seatpack. Hidden by the back guard if placed at the bottom of the post. Moved it to one of the seatstays and used an alternative shorter o'ring to fasten it on along wit...

Re: Ritchey kyote bars anyone.....?
I got them quite recently, though because of injury not given them a proper test ride yet. I couldn't get on with the (740 wide) bars that came on the Longitude even though I'd cut them down a chunk. Think it was the change in angle at the wrist that was causing finger numbness. As I run Fleegles on...

For the Sutra: SKS Edge aluminum Mudguards.
For the Longitude: Ritchey Kyote bars and a couple of 10 speed chains.
For general use an Agu top tube bag.

Re: Winter bivy comp: How cold can you go!
Reckon you need some sort of 'handicap' system based on latitude and height Shaf - chances of a Highlander (or Alpiner!) winning are gonna be pretty guaranteed otherwise  . Aye right enough, we'll all post loads of cold bivvies up then Scotroutes will nonchalantly stroll by and ace the lot of...
