Re: Trailstar copy's
Got one after seeing a post about it on the Bargain Alert Thread. Think I paid about £45, which I thought was a bargain at this lower price it's a steal. Although delivery was slow it arrived within the quoted time. I think it's great, massive but a superb rough weather shelter. Took a few practice ...

Re: Bar end shifters?
Got them on my Kona Sutra. Absolutely no problems adapting to them, to such an extent that the other day when I was riding on the bar ends on the MTB I dropped my hand searching for the non existent bar end. Makes feathering the front derailleur a breeze and if you have problems with indexing on the...

Re: Endurance / overtraining / fuel
Jameso, thanks for the advice, think I probably tend to push is a bit too hard at times so easy becomes steady becomes fast(ish) sort of thing. It's been a while since I've done formalised running training but I remember back when I got my first HRM how slow long slow distance actually was, slightes...

Thanks for raising the question Simon and thanks to everyone else for the excellent replies. My year so far hasn't gone to plan and looks as if autumn will be awful as wife has just applied for a new job 300 km away starting September, think the biking is going to take a knock so this info will help...

Colin, thanks for clearing up the SSS question for me. Just checked my bottles and no mention of IR3535, made in Poland apparently! Also thanks for the heads up on Smidge, I used to use Jungle Formula which although it worked I was never happy about putting something that could melt plastic on the s...

Treadlite Gear (eBay) Cuben fibre mini lantern. Only weighs 8g, more importantly it provides enough light to see around inside bivvy/tent. Perfect for late spring / summer when nights are short and not much light needed.

Nice bike Ton I see it appears to be Deore equipped, at least going by the chainset. Deore for me always represented best bang for buck, after which the rather expensive law of diminishing returns started biting in earnest

And brought a pile of bits and pieces, inner tubes, brake pads, grease, Park tyre boot, which I'll hopefully never need. More bikepacking related was a Topeak 18+ multitool lighter than the current Alien and more functions than the other one I have, looks good. Also got a Vaude cruiser bag, being a ...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.
April was done 28/29th so 4/4. No pictures as I forgot the camera, but it was on a lovely water meadow separated from the river by some trees. The meadow itself had some very natural looking copses scattered about and I bivvied on the edge of one of those. Woke in the morning to see a herd of fallow...

Re: Sunday night show me your vintage meths stoves thread
Brings back memories that does, though sadly no pics. When I was a lad ( 50 years now) my Grandfather would take me on summer day trips from Glasgow to exotic locations like Gourock, Balloch and Helensburgh. He had one of these and we always ended up on the shore having a brew and eating pieces wrap...

A Timber Bell...I even put it on when no one is around just because I love the pleasant tinkling sound, sadly I guess the novelty will wear off

A Timber Bell. Read about this upthread and couldn't resist. Very pleased with it and it will work well on the shared use paths and cycle lanes I often use. The wife has christened it the Tinkerbell! Probably not original I know. And, not the postie, but quick drop in to Decathlon to grab a few of t...

Ray, I'm not musical but that is a nice bit of work, hope you get lots of fun from it. FYI, my wife recently bought a ukulele from Lidl, wooden, Chinese made, cost her about £15 seem OK might be good for bike packing too at that price. She got hers to use at a summer camp she runs every year, makes ...

It doesn't look fundamentally different to the Alpkit Stem Cell, which I struggle to open and close with one hand. What's the trick? The way the shockcord is routed and the closing mechanism are very different ... the devil's in the detail. The elasticated draw cord passes through a spring toggle w...

I've got a Alpamayo stem bag, opens and closes no problems single handed. At the moment Backcountry Scotland have some in stock at £25. (No affiliation etc). Not used it much but appears well made and looks as if it will last. Find the prices of the Revelate stem bags a bit :o , but I do like my Pika.

I actually wish I had a plate size between my dinner plates and my smaller plates. Dinner plates seem crazy large to me... I took to filling them with salad rather than chips like I used to. Richard, I'm sure I read something about the increase in plate size over the last 20/30 years a while back. ...

Had a look at one for the last BAM. Two dead cats put me off a bit. Was wondering whether someone had spread rat poison or some other mysterious reason why two dead cats would occupy the same space (one recent one less so). Decided not to risk it!

Problem with this sort of stuff is it's lack of flexibility. Looking at it not sure it would be any lighter than a lightweight tarp and a couple of carbon poles? Might suit some though.
