Lake District - Campsites

Post by Giacomo »

Hi all,

Just looking for any tips for good campsites in the Keswick, Kendal, Wasdale sort of triangle?
My idea of a 'good' campsite is one that is relatively quiet, secluded, close to the fells, dog friendly and has some basic amenities (for the wife... Just a shower ideally).

Any tips or advice welcome. I've tried online but can't get past the large caravan type campsites with Saturday night bingo and a heavy dose of sandal/sock combos.

AND before all you wildcamping, shower dodging bikepackers that suggest 'The Lake District is a campsite'. I'm aware, trust me I like sleeping in the dirt too but I'm trying something a little unusual here and going with the wife for the weekend and we simply want a base to come back to after days in the hills.

Thanks,

Giacomo

Turner Hall in Dunnerdale fits the bill http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=323415 ... &A=Y&Z=120 Great pub about five minutes' walk away.

Wasdale Valley, taking it from the very head i.e. the dead-end;

You can camp in a field opposite the Wasdale Head Inn. S'okay though might be a bit light on amenities for the other half. The Inn itself is a bit of mountain heritage.

A little further back out the valley from the Inn is the NT campsite. I've never stayed there but imagine it's good.

At the other end of the valley is the Church Stile site. Statics, camping pods (mebe), shepherd's huts and campinghttp://www.churchstile.com/. It's a good site with a couple of decent pubs spitting distance away (micro-brewery in the Strands has been doing very well with CAMRA etc). I may be a tiny bit biased about this one though as I've got a static there

Eskdale:

The next valley over (Eskdale) has the Fisher Ground Campsite http://www.fishergroundcampsite.co.uk/. Never stayed there but again, good pub opposite and being the "unpopular" side of the Lakes it's a better vibe than some of the big stuff on the east.

On the back-roads between Wasdale and Eskdale valley is the Old Post Office site in Santon Bridge http://theoldpostofficecampsite.co.uk/. The eponymous pub just round the corner is alright too, though I prefer the ones in Nether Wasdale and the George.

National Trust campsites in both Langdale and Wasdale. Nice, quiet, empty this time of year. We were at Langdale this weekend. Pretty much both go to spots when camping with the wife.

Fisher Ground isn't bad. It's right next to the La'al Ratty railway and about 200m from the King George pub. It can get ne'er do-wells from West Cumbria on certain weekends - we had some next to us one time, the owner said she couldn't chuck them out as they'd been drinking all day.

The Wasdale NT site's a lot nicer than the Langdale one.

A bit further away from Keswick is Dale Bottom campsite - there's also Scott Park in Braithwaite, this looks like your typical Caravanning Club site but is much better than appearances might suggest.

Tarn Foot, just outside Langdale is fabulous, but no shower. Quiet, friendly, laid back etc. It has got a tap !!!!

Stayed in one a bit bigger in Patterdale by a pub which was really nice and bit more in the way of facilities. Sorry, cant remember the name.

Not sure it's in your triangle exactly, but https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/featur ... e-campsite just south of Coniston is nice and has a good pub/deli nearby.

For Eskdale, Boot is the best bet (avoids those West Cumbrians that Bob's sniffy about ;-) ) - https://coolcamping.com/campsites/uk/en ... 66-eskdale

Near Keswick - http://stayinthornthwaite.co.uk/camping/ as mentioned above, or I'm pretty sure you can camp in the garden at Longthwaite hostel - really nice riverside setting, cafe/bar in hostel - https://youthhostelsguide.com/hostels/view/20

Finally, Buttermere - http://www.sykefarmcampsite.com/facilities

Near keswick I like lane foot farm at Braithwaite. Three good pubs in within a one mile walk. Bacon and a few basics available and can have campfires.

We stayed in the Fisher Ground years ago, maybe around 2006/7? Did a couple of nights there, walked up Scafell Pike and saw some of my wife's friends

Was pretty good from what I remember, as far as campsites go. Allows open fires which was the main draw

I haven't stayed on a proper campsite for a good few years now

Thanks for all the tips everyone! Really appreciate it. National Trust at Wasdale looks to be a great location for a bit of hiking and running. Will check out the others too. I plan to hike the Bob Graham over 3-4 days later in the summer so will be good to scout out a few bits and familiarise myself with that area too.

Plenty of options. Cheers everyone

Beware being allocated one of the stream-side pitches at Langdale. I woke with my mat floating on several inches of water after a surprise storm a few years back.
