Random post thread!

Post by redefined_cycles »

Just a bit of a success story that's all, and I wanted to share. You see, I'm now all out of Exposure lights but have retained the brackets. Obviously you don't get rid of an Exposure to divorce the brand forever as the customer support is just too good.

For the moment anyway I'm not in a financial position to get any new shiny thing of that expense. But the brackets remain fixed on both the mountain and road bike. I'd decided to use the 1200 lumens Nitecore on the handlebars - which works suprisingly good. Then the new Moon I have on the helmet, but it's the winter helmet. The second Nitecore is just 800 lum affair and a bit small so I tend to just keep that at home.

Enter the Cateyes. AMPP 400, of which we own two. One is the little mans and the other is mine. Rated highly by myself as, despite the battery only lasting 3 to 7 hours of useable (night) light for the trails, it's on a par with the Exposures. In addition, where the Exposure isn't 'field' chargeable without owning and carrying a separate cable, the Cateyes are. Tiny usb port and one can charge whilst the other sits in the handlebar to light the way.

Fast forward to today and the point of this post. I've not ridden much during the last month or so due to ramadhan. The little riding I did do was during daylight hours so the headlights were rarely needed/taken.

Next (big) ride planned for the 3rd and it would be wise to take some headlights. Problem is, the big Nitecore can't be found. The small Nitecore is in the loft but not as pretty, but can be used at a push. The Moon headtorch is stuck to the winter, 'warmer aero' helmet. Exposures no longer owned. One of the Cateyes stopped working some months ago and...

Well, one of the hopes was the other Cateye AMMP 400. But the other day when I tried to sling it into the bracket on the mtb, it wouldn't slot. Looked on the underside of the light and the clicky/pushy thing had sheared away. I'd considered throwing away the other that's not been charging for months but decided against it.

I also briefly pondered putting a, 'spares or repairs' ad up here for Cateye that doesn't charge. But honestly, I thought people might laff and think I'm taking the pee. Worked out in my favour as I (reckon I) can take the back bracket off the broken bracket AMPP. Then carefully reattach it to the broken charging AMPP..

Question is, do I then chuck away the salvaged unit or keep it in the spare parts box :o Which then continues my problem of hoarding and needing a right good tidy up!!

Little bit of careful hex-ing later...

We now have light coming out of the correct torch.

I think I also have a theory about why they both went on the blink. Maybe I've been treating em like cheap Cateyes (they're not cheap) rather than exposingly expensive Exposures. So some man handling might have gotten the better of em :???:

Oh well, we have light Alhamdulillah :-bd

Ed: title changed to random post. Can't recall if we already have one of them but will transfer if it turns out to be the case...

Top work Shaf. High end bodge that. I say keep for spares. I rarely throw anything and am regularly surprised that i have just the correct part in my big box of crap.

My moon meteor came with a helmet bracket that attaches with velcro straps - can't you just swap it across?

Yes, mine came with the same and I could have a look to see if it has a separate bracket for the bike. Problem is I used 3m/GoPro VHB mount to make it a secure fit and do away with the straps

Yeah, they do also come with a bar clamp with the same QR plate. Not sure that would work on your helmet though

Better to take your climbing legs

I am only taking an exposure joystick and not expecting to be out in the dark.
