Medium sized seat bags

Post by whitestone »

I suppose it depends what you term "medium" but from what I've been able to search on there's a gap between the very small bags like the Kowari at 3 litres https://www.alpkit.com/products/kowari and the Airlok at 13L https://www.alpkit.com/products/airlok-xtra-tapered. Does anyone know of a bag in the 5-6 litre range? I know I could use the Airlok and roll the top down lots.

The Pika is quoted at 6-12L.

Or a harness style with a small drysack?

I know that barely filled bags can be a bit unstable though.

I use a wildcat tiger wayfarer with the 6L tapered dry bag. Not cheap but as long as I remembered to cinch it tightly it was rock solid and I barely noticed it while riding.

Altura Vortex? https://www.evanscycles.com/altura-vort ... k-EV312809

No idea what it's like or if it's value for money, sorry, but it is 6L !
We go out into the hills to lose ourselves, not to get lost. You are only lost if you need to be somewhere else and if you really need to be somewhere else then you're probably in the wrong place to begin with.

Lately I’ve just been using an alpkit tapered bag with Velcro straps at seat post and looped round the saddle rails.

Tend to have clothing and a bit of food in there. No so much weight I guess

I was thinking along those lines but the Airlok is a little on the large side despite it being a "small" 13 litres.

The Vortex looks about right, might give it a go.

I've got the Vortex (bought by mistake as I didn't see the 'compact' part). It's great, waterproof etc - small though. I managed to fit a pair of jeans, t-shirt, arm warmers and a spare base layer in there IIRC. Annoyingly you have to undo both straps to open it, so it's not for stuff you want to be accessing regularly.

I just roll the top down to suit. It can be as small as you want

Got one of these a wee while back for carrying my spare clothes when commuting - http://eu.bikepack.pl/category/repack/repack-x-small Might be a bit small but is around 5l I think... Quality is excellent and the straps double back through the buckles so very secure

Backcountry Scot has these smaller options from Defiant; they are a bit pricey (compared to European options, less so other US brands) although there is a 10% discount currently available. Thinking about trying one on the Spearfish, where I have very limited clearance on the small frame. Or I might just fit a dropper post and take less sub standard!
