Velogical Rim Dynamo Experiences?

Post by pistonbroke »

Shameless steal from STW , thoughts about longevity and output. Would it be the answer to powering lights and gps without needing a wheeel rebuild or replacement if standards change. Seems typically German build quality.

Interesting Duncan. I've being waiting for someone to produce something similar ... I don't really see a downside.

I'd be worried about fragility and its use on muddy rims but it could work for road use.

I'm not sure they would work in all conditions

Off the wall suggestion from me, but could you engineer something that retrofitted at hub level to avoid the mud situation that I fully empathise with.

Hmm, not convinced this is aimed at us folks. Road certainly, off road...no, not so much.

It relies on the higher velocity of the rim.

There's a few out there - this one even works with disk brakes. Whether it works with 12mm through axles is another thing...

Isn't it a new version of the bottle dynamo? Or am I missing something?

Surely every point on the wheel has the same velocity?

But you meant angular velocity didn't you.

-Edited now I had coffee-

Bottle dynamos though, yes, I'd give one a go if the weight and output compared to a hub dynamo.

I had a chat with the guy behind this last week :

http://ridelo.cc/

there's scant information on the website but some of the figures he was talking about seemed pretty impressive. I'll see if I can dig out some more info.
