Not great gaiters

Post by giryan »

Something tells me these gaiters aren't going to be that useful:

Does anyone have any recommendations for gaiters?
I quite fancy getting some (cheapish) to use on the Cairngorms loop.

Always quite like the look of these. Look like they'd take some abuse and come out smiling.

Are you after something that offers complete lower leg protection or just something to stop stones getting in your boots/shoes? If the latter then what you need are "Stop Tous gaiters" - https://www.xtreme-outdoors.com/trailwi ... olive.html

My current full length gaiters are Rab, can't remember the model, got them cheap at Boundary Mill (the shame) but I'd get a pair with robust straps as that's the bit that gets most wear and tear.

I've got some RAB ones, they look similar to these.

I've had them 10 years and not had an issue. If away on holiday I've always found them really handy as it means the bottom of your trousers and wet and muddy. I used to only wear mine in the hills though. I've seen people putting them on in the car park in Ambleside to look round the shops  Perhaps they think there's a dress code for outdoor shops?

I just use pretty cheap bog standard gaiters, but I get ones that fit and wear them properly, not like that

I also fit a small cable tie between my bottom shoe lace loops/holes to hook the gaiter over to save wearing through the laces. Top Tip :-bd

Ace, good sounding options, thank you.

Yeah, when I did the Pennine Brideway I did get quite a bit of grit in my shoes :(, although I have just got some XM9s, so will be in a better starting place :)

My first gaiters were expensive Gtex snow gaiters. Put a crampon through one first time out and nearly pitched me headfirst off the mountain.
Only buy cheap ones now from Mountain Warehouse treat them as disposable.
If you are wearing them on the bike leave the top of the leg open to breath.

I got some ankle gaiters from Decathlon a while ago, they were very cheap (around £7 IIRC). They're pretty decent for snow riding and keeping stones out of your boots/shoes but obviously have their limits. It looks like they're not available at the moment though. https://www.decathlon.co.uk/forclaz-lig ... 45923.html
