Around Homer Road & Pixie Lane area is deffo the best place to park. Quiet and lots of space.
Re: Braunton 150
Hi all. This will be my first bikepacking "race" after a few years a doing this sort of thing for fun on my own. I've signed up for the HTR this year (gulp), so this race will be a good opportunity to test the legs and kit out.
I was wondering if anyone was travelling down from the Bristol area on the Friday morning and had space for an extra person + bike? Petrol money would be reimbursed in a currency of your choice. For the return journey I'll probably get the train as I assume it will be difficult to coordinate finishing times etc. Thanks

Re: Braunton 150
Just been looking at the ride. Some meaty climbs in there.
Couple of the biggest right at the end of the first day, or the beginning (or middle!) of the second depending on how slowly we go.

Its fine, they are all walkable
Re: Braunton 150
I've heard that before... and I counter with 5-10s vs mud.
Re: Braunton 150
Liamg,
I'm heading down from South Bristol on Friday morning - leaving 7ish I guess. I've got space in the van for you and a bike... email me on i dot s dot penton-voak AT bristol dot ac dot uk if that would suit you!
I'm heading down to bideford to see family after wards, so no lift back unfortunately!
cheers,
Ian

Re: Braunton 150
Thanks for the offer Ian, but I've managed to sort a lift out with Alan who's also travelling down.
Re: Braunton 150
I'm out as I got knocked off on my last 'training' ride this weekend less than 10 minutes from getting back home. I will now be sat around waiting for the surgeon on Friday rather than pushing my bike up a hill on Exmoor.
To say that I am dissapointed is an understatement!
Hope you all have a great time and the weather stays kind

A touch late on this...but if anyone is coming down from t'North or West Mids on Thursday, I'm hunting for a car share (ex Shrewsbury). Happy to feed someone's car and belly in order to make it happen.

As there seem to be posters who know the area here...
...are there any particularly good points on the route for food / resupply? I recall my last major adventure passing precisely no shops, and I had failed to bring enough food to make the experience pleasurable!

I came across this site http://www.whatsonexmoor.co.uk/ so you can check out the villages along the way. Looks like plenty of cream tea shopsRichard G wrote:As there seem to be posters who know the area here...

Re: Braunton 150
Plenty of places for re-supply. It certainly isn't the HT550. That said, it depends on what time you get there......
There are pubs in Simonsbath, Withypool, Tarr Steps, Winsford, lots of shops in Minehead, then it is Porlock (pubs and shops), Lynton and Lynmouth (lots of everything) and Combe Martin. Lots of potential for hanging out, supping a coffee and eating some cake.

Re: Braunton 150
Tis only weather. All the more reason for a big effort on the Friday.
Forecast varies. Most exposed bits should be done by the Friday.
I tend to find the surf forecasts more accurate than a lot of the main weather sites. There forecast ain't so bad.

North coast sections sheltered from those S winds.
All that said. A waterprooof top and shorts is probably a good idea.

I'm bringing my overtrousers (going to strap them onto my handlebar bag), but I probably wont bring my full on jacket, I'll make do with a packable one. I may yet regret that, but ehh.
Sadly I lack any waterproof shorts.

Re: Braunton 150
The wind looks very much like a south to south-south-westerly so so long as there aren't extended periods on exposed ground heading into that and the associated rain it shouldn't be too bad (says he hopefully )
Finish this cup of tea then start packing the car before picking my wife up from work and heading down to the SW.
As an aside: does anyone have any recommendations for somewhere to eat tonight in Braunton?

Fish n chips - Squires or South Sixteen
Restaurants - The Riverside or Corner Bistro
Pub Food - Sq or The White Lion
You can park in the middle of the village in the main car park.
Cheers
