What tyres are on your gravel bikes?

Post by gravitysucks »

Looking at different tyre options and wondering what these parts recommend?
Looking at something up to 40mm for road / touring / exploring duties.

As above. When they were out o0f stock and I needed new ones I bought some Challenge Gravel racer 38c instead. Wouldn't say they were any faster rolling really despite having less tread. Do make a cool noise when you skid though.

Ha, currently Schwalbe Marathon Pluses in 32c!

Do have some WTB Nano 40c tyres but the thought of having to remove the pluses (and then having to put them on again) is putting me off doing a switch every now and then

Nano 40s. At the risk of going OTT about them, they're easily the best road to off-road all rounders I've used over the years.

I've got the Nano 40c's too on my Vaya, though I've nothing to compare to in terms of other gravel tyres I think they're the business.

Conti Speed Ride in 42mm. Though the amount of positive reviews of Nanos does make me wonder if I made the right choice. No problems with the Contis yet, but might be tempted by my favoured CX-King for softer condtion rides.

Can anyone point to a place with Nano 40C's in stock in the UK? Thanks.

In my garage

Seems like they're out of stock everywhere huh? Wonder if it's worth checking with any of the German bike shops?

Tubeless / folding would be nice :geek:
I've signed up for a stock alert at CRC, so will see what comes. Patience is a virtue and all that

Haha so after a fair bit of searching and shouts from up there /\ I thought Nano's it is. Then Ian chirped in to confirm what I was starting to think. None anywhere!
I've got a week to find something or the vision of a new bike without shoes will be too depressing to cope with!

Wouldn't you be better off with wired until folders come back in stock, rather than none at all? I have just ordered a pair for the CX bike for the winter @£17 each, CRC.

I called hotlines to find out about the WTB nano's - the race or tubeless variants are expected to come into stock in mid/late November.

Just put a pair of schwalbe thunderburts through their paces - 29x 2.1 on the fargo, 570 miles with about 100 on a variety of tracks. Better on road than the nanos and the side knobs do work well on soft stuff but they are a bit fragile. I got the snakeskin ones but the main tread area is very susceptible to punctures - got multiple cuts from sharp stones and I've been struggling with tubless sealant resulting in several punctures and several puddles of sealant. Eventually I had to bung a tube in.... Light but overall I think I prefer the nanos

got Conti Cyclocross speed on the CdF came with the bike, not really used them in sloppy stuff, but hard packed and road there vaguely exciting

Does anyone know if these are OK to set up tubeless? The Race and TCS versions seem to differ only in the type of bead according to the WTB website?
