Tuscany Trail 2015

Post by Purty »

Entries are open today. Who else will be going?

I have already purchased my Garmin maps from http://www.ioffer.com/i/new-garmin-trek ... -148002023

http://www.tuscanytrail.it/entries.html

I will be signing up once I get to work to use printing and scanning facilities. I also have to work out the medical certificate requirements.....

I am planning to fly from either Liverpool or Manchester and I am based in NW Wales.

I'll be entering once I reach civilisation and a printer.

Going to drive to either the start or finish and get the train to the other.

Can't wait!

Great stuff - I plan to do it in late August this year with the wife, rather than the offical race.

Be interesting to see if the official GPX route is different to the one kindly worked out by Richpips using the map source on the offical website.

I've mapped it onto a 1:200,000 paper Marco polo map of Tuscany and looks like a great route.

Planning on doing it on a monster cross bike, which hopefully will be up to the job.

Purty, I am 99% sure the medical certification requirements apply to Italian nationals only. Might be worth checking though.

I plan to enter later today. Looks like a great route and the promo vid has certainly worked it's magic on me. I just hope all those little Italian towns we pass through have enough salami and fresh fish for everyone.

Hi Giacomo,

I rode Iron Bike in 2012, they also required a medical certificate but this was wavered if you held a BC racing licence. If you did not have a racing licence you had to be assessed in Italy and the cost and faff was about the same as getting a licence. I will contact the organisers and see what they want in this instance and post back to the forum.

My Garmin Italy maps arrived yesterday and everything seems to work fine on my Garmin Edge 800.

Response as follows:

"In Italy it is made by the family doctor (or medical basis). May fit even the number of medical insurance.

In practice in this document must be written that your state of health is correct to participate in Tuscany Trail".

Based on this I will quote my European Health Insurance number on the entry and hope this is sufficient. As always I will purchase snowcard insurance cover.

Thanks Purty,

Looking forward to it. See you there!

ENTERED!!!

Need to provide them with my 'fiscal code or SSN'???

Anyone who entered know what this is?

NI number?

UTR?

I've no idea what it could be if its not either of those.

Ah, this looks incredible! What an amazing route!!

I certainly won't be able to get the time off to do it this year, but I'm gonna stick it in my to-do list for 2016!

Good luck to all who enter! :-bd

I am planning on driving down to Massa in the van.

Does anyone know the rules regarding wild camping in the Massa area and is there anywhere safe to leave the van during the week?

I have emailed the organiser and will let everyone know his response.

Be very interested to hear what they say.

You figured out the journey up to the start yet?

I'll be driving down from Chamonix so keen to figure this stuff out too.

Purity,

I have an idea.....

How's about we meet up somewhere on the drive down, take/leave my car at the end, both go in yours up to the start and then I drive us both back to your car at the end?

More driving but less time/cash on trains and the convenience would mean less writing logistics.

Two things could be problematic.

1. If one of us had a problem (though the train is still an option).

2. If we're massively mismatched for pace (I'm training towards 4 days to finish and I'll be pleased/surprised with anything less or more).

Just a thought so let me know what you think.

Cheers, Gairy

Hi Gairy,

Thanks for the offer but I will be travelling down with Ian Wilmshurst, travelling from North Wales, England then through France and Switzerland to avoid costly tolls.

We will be getting into Massa hopefully early evening Thursday.

I am planning on riding between 4-5 days and catching the train back north but I have no specific plans to rush.

Hopefully we will meet on the trail.

Have the 'offical' GPX been released yet?
