Farting - Does it happen to you?

Post by Farawayvisions »

Right then, this is pretty embarrassing  but Mpolo and myself were cycling in Ireland for 10 ten days and both of us were farting non stop. It got to the stage where I was almost farting in front of strangers, I'd become so used to letting them rip. I'm not joking, it was relentless and we barely had a drink although I did bring home a bottle of poteen.

What I'm wondering is this: Does hard pedalling make anyone else let off, or does anyone have any idea why this was happening? Dan is a vegetarian and although I normally eat what he eats, I eat meat and fish when we're away sometimes.

Ideas would be most welcome and I apologise in advance if anyone deems this post inappropriate. Thanks.

The most obvious answer is Guinness though - how much drinking is "barely"?

Edit to add - last time I did some road touring my friend brought a lot of cous cous - as well as being fast-show level middle class, it made me fart something awful. It warmed the tent up at least...

A pint of Guinness for me and a pint and a half for mPolo or a bottle of wine between us and a bottle of Kinnegar ale for me (all on separate nights).

Cous cous hasn't arrived in Donegal yet and food was the usual stuff, porridge, fruit, cereal bars, coffee, cake etc. The only food that I know that makes me fart is lentils and I didn't eat any.

The mostly likely answer is that you are just working your digestive system a bit harder than usual trying to convert food and fat to energy.

The thing is, this never happened when we were touring in Morocco, although I was starving when we were there.

I find exercise makes me fart. And eating.
Walking and cycling are bad for it, but I just consider them as extra propulsion - sort of speed farts. I am sure it takes more energy to stifle one though than to let it out in all it's glory.
And at 47 they are still funny! :-bd

I had forgotten about that, I was too. Had to keep standing to let out massive ones. I usually tried to do it in front of you or andy. Fun times.

Yes, as much as I could and every couple of hours. I get hungry the minute my arse touches the saddle.

That could well account for it then

Why are gas clouds always "the size of Nebraska" in movies?
Maybe its like using Wales or Switzerland as an approximate unit of measurement.
Anyway. yes it does happen to me. See above. You have been warned.

I often fart. I seem to fart more than friends and colleagues and 'blame' my love for Indian food, tons of onions & garlic and beers. I don't hold back but mostly try to be a bit descrete, but if I hold them back my tummy feels bloated and I become uncomfy, so why shouldn't I just feel free to let go..?

There are also different types of farting during trips. I seem to be sensitive to altitude changes and once I go beyond 2500 - 3000 m I believe I fart more, so have started to calling it air pressure/altitude compensation farting. ACF.
The other one I often come across trips is compacting farting. Those days during multi day/week trips where you don't feel like making a hole and crouching down (eg in a storm) to take a dump. So if I hold a load back for a bit, I fart more. Poo compacting farting. PCF.

We, trip buddies, make fun of it. No taboos.

Let's put it this way, people tend to give me plenty of space first thing in the morning.

One thing to avoid, is drinking something like Water Kefir and then eating a dinner based on Jerusalem Artichokes. Honestly thought my intestines were going to rupture...
There are theories at the bottom of my jargon.
