Tubeless recommendation for fat bike
Have any of you fatbike owners gone tubeless and if so, what product did you use?

Re: Tubeless recommendation for fat bike
Just google "ghetto tubeless fatbike" and you have all the information you need.
Gaffer/gorilla tape or split tube, or even keep it tubed but go with 26 x 2.6inch DH tubes (my preferred option as its lighter).
Most folk will be gaffer/gorilla tape, some will use the split tube..... I have used both and gaffer/gorilla tape worked for me.
This subject has been done to death across umpteen forums so plenty of info out there, including which is the most popular method.

Coastkid videos are useful on the split tube option.

Re: Tubeless recommendation for fat bike
If the rims have cutouts, keep the rim strip in, then a single wrap of 3inch wide Gorilla tape will normally work. Don’t use the 2 inch stuff as you’ll need to wrap it twice and the sealant gets into the join.
Some tyres/rims go up immediately, some take a few days/weeks of constant use to seal properly. The worst I’ve found so far has been the Surly Marge Lite, the best a Sun Ringlé Mulefut.

Does that mean that I can do away with a split tube, or is it still necessary?AlasdairMc wrote:If the rims have cutouts, keep the rim strip in, then a single wrap of 3inch wide Gorilla tape will normally work. Re: Tubeless recommendation for fat bike
Some trial and error is likely. I’ve got On-One and DT rims and the DT ones are much easier for tubeless because they’re a tighter fit. The usual problem with fat bike tubeless is getting an initial seal and I’ve found the key is packing out the rim (if it needs it). I think I ended up using polystyrene radiator insulation on the On-One rims. It’s still holding up a couple of years later.
Re: Tubeless recommendation for fat bike
It is a choice, split tube or sealing with tape/foam padding.

This is what I've done.NorwayCalling wrote: or even keep it tubed but go with 26 x 2.6inch DH tubes (my preferred option as its lighter).

I've no idea how mine are done, Ian B might be able to shed more light on that since I bought the bike off him. Sun Ringle rims BTW.

Re: Tubeless recommendation for fat bike
So if you use a split tube, how easy is it to seat the tyre nicely on the rim? I often have trouble with seating the bead on my Pug and I feared the extra layer of split tube sandwiched between the bead and rim would make that worse. I hate the wobbly tyre that an incorrectly seated tyre gives.
Re: Tubeless recommendation for fat bike
I'm going to go for the split tube option on DT Swiss rims which are more cut-outs than rim.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Re: Tubeless recommendation for fat bike
No probs seating a tyre if the tube isn't too thick (I tried a 16" motorcycle tube for a while and the tyre slipped off the beads at low pressures)
I'm currently using the café latex strips - pricy but totally idiot proof and much easier to change tyres than split tube.

Re: Tubeless recommendation for fat bike
They look good. Can you get latex strips to fit a Margelite?

Great. Thanks.
Re: Tubeless recommendation for fat bike
Those caffelatex strips are exactly what I was looking for. I shall be ordering a pair today.

Re: Tubeless recommendation for fat bike
DT Swiss rims’s BR710’s don’t need any faffing about after you fit the enclosed rim strip. I just added a single wrap of tape each side of it and 3 years later they still do t leak air.
