Garmin Dakota bike mount recommendation
Can anyone recommend a decent, but not too expensive mount for the Dakota?
Thanks!

It's the same as the Oregon isn't it? I use the Garmin mount but wrap the bar with a bit of cut up inner tube to provide grip otherwise the weight of the device causes it to rotate around the bar.

Aye, standard mount here with the addition of a little tape on the mount face to make a more secure fit between it and the back of the gps ....... and use a lanyard.

Grip tape also works.

Is this the type that you guys are using?

Doesn't appear to be available from Garmin in UK, it's only on the US site.

Isn't that the one prone to ejecting the unit under bumpy braking? I have suffered this and had to tie it on with a lanyard.

They're crap for proper descents, full stop. At least with the etrex.pistonbroke wrote:Isn't that the one prone to ejecting the unit under bumpy braking? I have suffered this and had to tie it on with a lanyard.
One of the big reasons I stopped using that GPS.

Speak to Dave B.
RAM mount for me - a bit big and bulky but idiot proof so far (4 years and counting....)

Re: Garmin Dakota bike mount recommendation
my etrex was ejected from that mount three times so I also use the RAM mount- it was very poor.
Secure as can be with space for batteries underneath and never ejected it yet - i cannot see what would except for smashing it to bits crashing

Re: Garmin Dakota bike mount recommendation
I use the standard Garmin mount (as shown above). I've had a Dakota self-eject from it, but never my Oregon. I suspect it's because the back of the Dakota is the same plastic as the restt of the case whereas the Oregon mounting part is metal.
Re: Garmin Dakota bike mount recommendation
Is it? I've never noticed that. Also never had an Oregon eject from the mount, one got a bit wobbly as the plastic mount wore so I think I just bulked it back up with tape.ScotRoutes wrote:the Oregon mounting part is metal.
I can't get my head round the RAM mounts, which bit do you use to attach to the handlebars/bike?

Re: Garmin Dakota bike mount recommendation
The ones on eBay are not genuine parts.
They are cheap in price and quality.
I have three mounts over three bikes.
One genuine Garmin (cost 3 or 4 times the eBay one) on an MTB - no ejections
One cheap one on CX bike - ejected once or twice on rough ground
One cheap one on an MTB - no ejections.
I guess there is probably some difference in tolerance with the cheap ones so some are better than others.
The moral is to use a lanyard and even if the mount lets go of the GPS occasionally you won't drop/smash/loose it.

I have an oregon with a metal mount. It has never ejected. It's twisted round in the past though, solved with inner tube and/or tape as mentioned above
I've used the official mount and the copy on ebay. Also used a RAM mount on my motorbike

Re: Garmin Dakota bike mount recommendation
My Garmin Dakota 20 Mount got worn after some time (it’s the two rails which get worn, they’re about 2 inches long).
On Aidan Hardings web blog he used araldite to solve the problem.
I did that and it works.
Mix the araldite (you buy it with two types of gluey stuff, mix the two together), then smear it onto those two rails, not too much otherwise the Dakota wouldn’t go on, let it set, and job done.
To get the Dakota on, what I do is to fit the bottom part on to the top of the rails, hold the bottom of the mount, then thump the top of the Dakota with your fist.
And it’s not jumped out again.

Re: Garmin Dakota bike mount recommendation
I have a quick/dirty bodge to stop my Etrex rattling/ejecting in an official Garmin mount...I layed a single layer of gaffer tape around one rail. This stopped the rattling and makes it incredibly difficult to pull the unit out. I have to thumb down the tab at the end and thump the base of the unit until it gets passed the tab. I usually end up thumping it out of the mount and the tether catches it.

Re: Garmin Dakota bike mount recommendation
Never had a problem with mine ejecting using the original Garmin mount, even after blasting around the Pyrenees for a few weeks. The cheap eBay ones are useless.
Top tip.. I bought an eBay one, it was really loose. Get a hot air gun and soften the plastic, it can then be bent up slightly at the bottom to give a much firmer fit.

Thanks everyone for the replies and comments.
As I have "more than one bike", I've ordered several of the cheap ebay ones, and will adjust as necessary and leash to the bike!
