"I'm a kind of mechanised tramp"

Post by JackT »

Great BBC Scotland programme from 1971 about Bill Houston, celebrating 25 years & 400,000 miles of rough stuff touring / bikepacking / whatever.

Thanks I enjoyed that immensely, for the younger among us the big metal tower with a wheel on top was a pit. We used to have them when i was young, until a nasty lady took them away, still not sure why she wanted them :???:

My first bike trips were on an old 10 speed Raleigh laden with fishing rods and an old primus, us brothers would cycle out to the old slag heaps ( actually a nice place) and fish in the streams the explore the top them cook eggs and bacon nicked from the fridge. Happy days which this film reminded me of

That particular A-frame still stands, the less obvious remnants are families in the surrounding towns & villages still feuding from the strikes.

The Kent pits were solid so not too much feuding, still not a nice time, especially with the Met tramping around the town on horseback come Friday night treating everyone as an enemy of the state , regardless of whether they were miners or not.
