Alternative hunka-xl?

Post by Moder-dye »

So, Santy decided the hunka-xl was the least important thing on my list.

Fair enough, but I've been wanting one for ages as it's half the weight of the bivy I have and also much bigger than it. But looking at alpkit it's now being discontinued

Anyone know of a similar (large) sized reasonably priced lightweight bivy, or got a hunka-xl for sale?

I'd email them. Discontinuing the XL but keeping the smaller one seems a bit odd. I've got both, and they require different approaches to being in the bag. I'd be surprised if they're thinking that the normal one should stay but the XL isn't worth keeping.

Was thinking to do that but says none are in stock and the line has been 'archived' and no longer available for purchase

I do recall reading a post on their blog about a new bag they were developing. I think it had a hoop.

Was that the one that didn't have any oxygen in it?

Yep, it needed a CO2 alarm.

It did sound like they had ideas on how to fix it though, from the write up.

Looks like I might have to buy some fabrics get the sewing machine out.

I've no interest in that hooped bivy, just want a lightweight bag big enough for my mat and me ( 6' and broad) in it with some wriggle room.

I really can't think of anything that performs as well, of a similar size that costs the same. A RAB Storm would be about the nearest but they've risen in price rather a lot over the last year, might be worth looking for a discounted or S/H one?

Does it need to be fully waterproof or just resistant?

Cheers. The storm looks good but pretty much twice the cost, maybe...

As for water resistant /proof. I can't see me using it without atleast some sort of partial tarp cover though it'd need a waterproof base to ensure I don't need ground cover.

Might be worth a classified post for a S/H Borah then OR, there's a bloke on ebay makes some nice bags. I recall he's called Scotty and I know Tony (Lawmanmx) has one and rates it.

At a guess the Hunka XL wasn't selling that well and once the stock had gone they decided to use warehousing space for something else. Business is business and all that. A pity really IMO since there aren't that many larger bivy bags around and the HXL was ideal for use with the larger volume of winter kit.

I was just about to post same thing!

Got a standard Hunka but having broad shoulders I have to sleep with arms outside of bag. Does seem to be discontinued.

Is the RAB storm wide at the mouth?

Number 3 is a Rab Storm, not quite as wide as number 1 which is a Rab Assault but that's massive.

Number 4 is a Hunka XL.

The Vaude Bivi bag Active could be worth a look.

I have a custom made PHD one

Can't get my mat in it but I had it made longer than normal as most bivvy bags are too short for me at 6'3. I also had them seam seal it, their sleeping bag cover didn't have seamed seals

Only bag I can get my mat in is my borah

Tigoat make great bags. Bigger than an xl hunka, and mine has the hood, mesh or open setup. Weights next to nothing either.

Have a look on their website http://www.titaniumgoat.com/index.html

Oh and they currently have a sale on. Shipping took 4-6 days.

In mine I can fit an xtherm xl mat, a quilt, myself (5.10) and still have room for my bar bag and seat pack. It still fills roomy, even then. I think mine is the Raven with Full Bug Net Hood. If you email or call them and say you need it quickly, I found them very helpful.

Was trying various combinations of bag/quilt/mat and bivvy bag over Christmas.
My Hyperlite MW fits inside the Borah with loads of room but not inside the Hunka without restricting internal height for a down bag.
Looks like I shall be after an XL once they are available.

Nowhere near as big as a Hunka XL ... you'll not fit a air mat in one.
