Re: HT550 - 2024

Alex (the leader) has now covered 250 miles in under 24 hours :o He's now over a day ahead of where I was after 1 day! Looking at the pictures on Alan G's Instagram at how much luggage he's got (I have more on my bike on the Monday commute with my office clothes) I'm going to predict he's not going...

Re: Being the DNF on my charity bike ride challenge

Glad to say that we didn't get a 0% finishing rate. Through the night the 2nd of 3 riders had to tap out. Mechanical issue somewhere in deep Wales (chain caught behind sprocket which he couldn't pry out). But, the other lad finished it and within the time limit. Overnight I had increased the cut off...

Re: Anyone local to these areas able to review (sections of) my route pls?

Rode it yesterday. Well 100 mikes of it and another lad has done well over 170 miles I reckon. Brilliant route, so thanks so much for your advice everyone. I never once thought I was in too much fast traffic that couldn't be negotiated. Also, pity the panoramic walk/view only came onceall light had ...

Re: Being the DNF on my charity bike ride challenge

Anyway, so the route had been some time in the making. After putting a request on here asking if someone could look over my route so I did'nt need to go and ride it in person, a few obvious errors were brought to attention straight away. Finally a route was finalised in OS maps with the View ranger ...

Being the DNF on my charity bike ride challenge

Thought I'd just document my thoughts after having got help from the forum with making my 2024 edition of the Khalid Bin Waleed Challenge. Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Manchester, Wrexham and back round after some more Welsh climbs via Coed Y Glyn and Bridgenorth. Report below, bear with!! Excellent exce...

Re: Brakes; mechanical or hydraulic?

I used to love my bb7. But after using hydro for years (mainly Avid in them days, but now Shimano) I once tried to go back to them. Best way I can desribe it was when going back to v brakes from the BB7

I'd definitely go hydro despite having had problems of squeal on various iterations of the SLX.

Re: Wildlife

There was a massive thud on the the window/door to the garden this morning. Usually these thuds are birds trying to fly through the house. This morning though it was a hare! There was a pair of them, male chasing the female, running round the garden for about ten minutes. They were about two metres...

Oh dear. Ialways assumed bamboo was ultralite but just as strong (as carbon). Maybe it's the amount of wrapping needed or the bits of metal. Interesting stuff

Re: New bike, thoughts!

Sonder. Yes, Andy they're a good brand (just don't get the strongest carbon version) and affordable/quality (somewhat) too.

Hopefully he'll find a nice gravel bike that he can then enter the Bearbones rides 😊

Re: New bike, thoughts!

From what I gathered and speaking to him, it's mainly a road bike it seems. Replacing his other road bike which is 8 speed Sora or something. Hence I'm trying to encourage him to get gravel friendly as there is a few options of excursions around where he is riding.

Thanks Simon and everyone else.

Hi Andy and welcome to the best bikepacking/cycling forum, well, in the world. Soon you'll be getting your first Revelate Design!! Doesn't have to be 1 x 11. 2 x 11 will be just as good and maybe cheaper. Ultegra is the next step up from 105, andy and grx is probably the gravel bike equivalent (whic...
