Re: HT550 Lift sharing thread
I plan on traveling from Edinburgh to the start on the morning of the race, leaving Edinburgh at 6am sharp. I can take at least two other people and bikes, 3 at a push. I'd be happy to take anyone so let me know, the only caveat is I will be leaving sharp and would expect anyone getting a lift to be...

Re: Cairngorm loop grp depart 2016
Got back at 10am on the dot. 130 miles in 24 hours including an overnight just outside of Braemar and a restaurant meal! Glad I turned back at Bynack More, was like looking into the jaws of deep winter on the mountains. Deep snow and constant cold wind. That route is hard at the best of times when y...

Re: Cairngorm loop grp depart 2016
I'm still going. Forecast looks good for tomorrow and river levels look low http://apps.sepa.org.uk/waterlevels/?sd=t&lc=234274
I may set off earlier now the group start is not official.
I'm prepared to divert / turn round if snow is too deep / rivers are too deep.

Do you get a time bonus for making a snowman? Only if they are riding a snow bike! On the positive side, the forecast has cleared a bit with less rain on Saturday http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/gfjm2yj30#?fcTime=1461974400 Also wind is low. The main considerations for us are ho...

Re: Cairngorm loop grp depart 2016
Do people just turn up in the car park for 10 ready to rock - or is there a cafe or somewhere where people gather to have a chat beforehand (in the warm  )? From my past experience, everyone turns up at the car park about 30 minutes or more before the start, fumbles about with kit, takes phot...

Re: Edinburgh Capital Trail 2016 - ride report
I think if you want to do the ITT Capital Trail, you need to start and end at Portobello Promenade. There is a car park on the West end of the promenade that is free.Mike wrote:Where is best to leave a car for three days? And best starting place I was thinking near the bottom if the route?

Edinburgh Capital Trail 2016 - ride report
Hi folks, I just did this ride yesterday, you can read my blog post about it here Anyone else done it this year? Any plans to do it? It is a great route IMO. Just had a pampering recovery day of lots of sauna time at Leith Victoria, a little swim, and now settling down to cleaning up and savoring a ...

That is the area, but the bit we are talking about doesn't look like that. Either it has changed, or it is a bit further up. A deeper cut into the hillside, exposed rock, and a steep step-over a small waterfall.

Tarptent Moment DW is great https://www.tarptent.com/momentdw.html I like, moved from a Scarp which is a bit heavier and larger. The Moment DW is plenty big enough for me (6 feet) and a good place to be in the cold damp wet tired.

Re: Cairngorm loop grp depart 2016
At the entry to Glen Feshie at ~864902 is it only fools like me who slavishly follow the gpx track who end up tiptoeing across a very exposed waterfall crossing? Or is that a normal part of the route? That is part of the route. I don't think there is another way round, unless you want to swim! I ag...

Re: Cairngorm loop grp depart 2016
I could do without repeating the damage I did to my feet after only 24 hrs of wet but non-freezing conditions a while back; took over 3 months to get all the feeling back. What do the CL vets recommend for preventing damaged feet from the combination of river crossings and (probably) low temps? Apa...

I swear by this stuff http://www.international.boots.com/en/Soltan-Moisturising-Suncare-Lotion-With-Insect-Repellent-SPF30-400ml_1207064/ - more for tics and sunburn than midges. I use 3/4 length tights or leg warmers, and put this stuff on the exposed bit. Haven't had a tic for years, touch wood. M...

I only have three worries: 1. overuse injuries 2. overuse injuries 3. giving up just outside Ullapool for the third time My knee started playing up last Friday and was not good on a long Saturday training ride  The Northern loop isn't that bad, have a good feed going into it and take it steady....

Would an updated GPS file be possible to produce that accounted for some / all of the changes in the course? There were a few times in 2013 where I was wandering about trying to find the 'path' where none existed. I just followed the GPS as exactly as possible, but it was weird to have to leave a go...

Yeh I use the X-King RaceSport. The sidewalls get slashed quite easily - has happened to me twice, the second time was worse with the slash going into the tread as well. I am still using them as I am a tight scot who is not going to give up on expensive tyres! I sewed the slashes closed with kevlar ...

Re: Quilt or Sleeping bag?
I have a Golite ultralight 3 season 800+ quilt that I got for a great price 5 or so years ago. It is enough for general winter use for me, for example was fine at the last Strathpuffer, although that was a reasonably warm night, but I was in it for 8+ hours so fairly comfy :-) Comes in at about 790 ...
