Woah...! $120 for a Dynamo-USB regulator? Sheesh, I'm in the wrong business. Gotta be $20 of parts, tops... and that's retail cost.

Re: Bar ends
A friend uses these from Giant, broadly similar to the Cane Creek, but half the price: http://bit.ly/1l7BIxV
I've used the Ergon grips with the bar ends built-in and liked them, though sometimes they made my hands feel a bit trapped / hemmed in for some reason...

If you're going to rip the maps rather than paying for them, a combination of MoBAC 1.8 and OruxMaps for Android will allow you to do it 100% for free. You'll need a laptop and a little tech know how, mind.

Re: Tell me about taking a bike on a plane
I've heard that the bags that double-or-larger mattresses get delivered in will do very well. I picked up a couple from a friend the other day, and they seem a bit thin, so maybe double bagging is the way to go. My approach (only used twice, but both times with success): 1) Get lots of releasable zi...

The website's awful, but several friends have had great results using these guys for both powder coating and polishing. Bristol based.

You could nip up into the South Pennines / Calderdale perhaps? When I lived there, I had an 80km(?) route worked out that I was going to dedicate as a permanent off-road Audax, but never got around to it. Linking the Dark Peak with Calderdale is easier now that the Pennine Bridleway is there.

Ah, fair enough, I couldn't tell from the photo, will keep looking. I may cannibalise the ex-hire-bike dynamo wheel I use on my commuter since it only cost me a fiver. Keen to get a test bicycle set up so that I can drive a dynamo hub with an electric drill in order to test lights and circuits.

You could potentially lose a little weight and look well cool by going with a Middleburn Duo. Small ring down to 27t, and 38/40/42/44t to choose from for the big ring. Almost as much range as a triple easily available, and you've the versatility of being able to swap the spider of you want to change...

Re the lightcharge: 250mA isn't a lot of charging current. That would be 8-9 hours for a full charge of my Galaxy S3 at 100% charging efficiency. Some more modern gadgets won't charge from such a low current. When I get my workspace sorted out, I'm hoping to look at DIY solutions. For those who know...

Re: Waterproof jacket recommendations?
Hood under helmet is fine on the hill, but I don't like it for commuting as it changes the way you hear other vehicles on the road - you lose directional sound cues as the hood is tight over your ears. Over helmet is still different, but better than under helmet.

Re: Waterproof jacket recommendations?
I do actually have an Arc'teryx Gore-Tex Pro-shell jacket that my wife got me in a sale last year, but I've been keeping it for 'best', i.e. skiing and big days on the hill. Since we're not going skiing this season, I'll try it out for commuting and see how breathable it is. My current commuting and...

I used to have a Buffalo shirt, which I got on with pretty well so long as it was below freezing! I'd imagine that the Teclite shirts would be far too warm for use as a summer waterproof, but I might have a look as a winter outer layer and commuting solution.

Re: Waterproof jacket recommendations?
Depends. I don't mind being a bit damp so long as I'm not cold and damp. I'd prefer something I can use in summer without getting too sweaty, and then put more layers underneath in the winter... so I guess I'm not looking at something which insulates as well as weatherproofs. Are you thinking about ...

Waterproof jacket recommendations?
I sweat. A lot. I therefore find many waterproofs uncomfortably sweaty. Looking to buy a new waterproof jacket to be used for regular commuting during the winter, and as an MTB waterproof jacket at the weekends. Features in order of importance are: 1) Very breathable 2) Good ventilation 3) Durabilit...

How narrow could you get away with? Do you really need 760mm width?
