I can just see Reg and Pete's next trip report now... furtively sneaking bikes through the office section... testing the kitchens with meths stoves... loading up on Daim bars... and then camping out in the bedrooms

A day early again, sorry Stevo.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-56913993

Good for them. That'll cause a few twisted English tongues this summer - which makes me vindictively cheery  .

I see they're complaining about other anglicisms too such as Hellfire Pass for Bwlch Y Groes / Bwlch-y-Groes. I think they should just be grateful that the BBB anglicism for BYG hasn't gained much traction outside our circle.

Don't personally see a huge problem with an English nickname for something - Hellfire Pass, Fukcit Hill etc - but I can see it's very galling to have a foreign 'translation'. Presumably done to make things easier for Victorian tourists?

Still, even Eryri "isn't Welsh"? "Meanwhile, Eryri, the Welsh name for Snowdonia, is believed to originate from the Latin: oriri (to rise) and was first documented in the 9th Century, despite it long being thought to refer to the Welsh name for eagle".

What do you reckon over the border there?

The Snowdon / yr Wyddfa thing crops up every few years. At the end of the day though it will still be referred to as Snowdon by most non-Welsh speaking people whatever the Local Park Authority call it.
Personally I always try to refer to places in the language of the Country within which they lie. Probably gives the locals a few laughs too but at least I try!

I'm in favour of retaining the local names and fighting the tide of anglification (or even saxification). Some folk round here have started calling one of the local mountains Shepherds Hill while it appears on the map as Meall a' Bhuachaille. They get short shrift from me.

You get something similar with folk here changing house names. I can never understand it myself, it'd be like me changing the name of this place from Ceulan to 'Riverside' ... not that Ceulan actually means river side but it's close enough.

Unless the Scottish government get more people start speaking gaelic, that's going to be a long battle. It'll be interesting to see the results of the 2021 census and see if it goes over 2% for the country as a whole.

You don't need to teach everyone Gaelic to retain names on current maps. If the Welsh eradicate the word Snowdon it just means I'll have to learn to pronounce Yr Wyddfa. I don't see that as any different to being in, say, Spain.

Lots of folk are "accidentally" speaking Gaelic anyway when they use current place-names. They just don't realise because the spelling has been anglicised.

As Peter and 'Routes say, people should make the effort to learn the local name, it's only a couple of words, and might lead on to learning a few other words too. Anglicising names is no different to holidaying in Spain and insisting on bacon and eggs for breakfast and Watney's Red Barrel to drink.

No, but local people will use the colloquial name irrespective of what it's called on a map and if most of the locals don't know how to pronounce the official name then they'll invariably use a name they can pronounce, though I'd agree that Shepherd's hill is more egregious than say Ben Nevis / Beinn Nibheis

The trouble for me, is that unless I actually hear someone say the name, reading it just doesn’t help. It’s even worse with Irish names with the different character set. I can happily manage Welsh names (I've lived here all my life, after all) but I’ve mangled lots of Scottish and Irish names. Sorry
