Silly question about chains

Post by ootini »

Hey,

I need to replace the chain on my bike, but I'm not 100% sure exactly which chain I need to buy. My bike is running a 10 speed Deore SLX set up. Triple up front, 10 speed cassette out back. Will any 10 speed chain do?

Yes. If it comes in various lengths then go for the longest - probably 116 links.

Yep. Just get whichever you like the look of/can afford/gives you most bragging rights.

"Surely a chain's a chain."

Luckily for you they don't have a 10 speed version

£100+ for a chain.

I suddenly much feel better about spending £26 on a KMC chain which had some 'new' anti-rust treatment.

Mind you if it doesn't work I'll be straight back to bog standard cheap chains!

On a more serious note:

In my experience, fully plated chains are easier to clean and are a little more sympathetic to neglect than the half-plated alternative, handy for winter commuting. I'm a fan of KMC quicklinks too and my LBS keeps stock of the chains I like to buy (KMC x8.99 in case you were wondering...), they also have a nice dog in the shop.

As a rule of thumb, it usually makes sense to buy things from companies who only make that particular thing: KMC and Wippermann make chains, Shimano/SRAM make a million different things.

I just get the cheapest KMC chains though the last one I bought was Shimano as CRC were doing some deal on full drivetrains and I was building up a bike. All much of a muchness really once you get a good dolloping of winter's finest covering them.

This is true, but it's a shame that Shimano don't buy the quicklinks as well....

They will do (must check embargo date and delete if needed)

And they quote the following lifespan

"Chain Optimisation will benefit you for 400+ miles in dry conditions and 250+ miles in wet and muddy conditions with no severe performance drop off (as happens with dry waxes after a far shorter period)."

So only 2 chains at £122 each to get round the HT550

Pretty sure an 8 speed chain I bought recently came with quicklinks.

I've killed two (bloody expensive) SRAM chains in the last 6 month. Utterly insane.

Sticking with KMC from now on.

Shimano now sell quick links
Aah ok, I stand corrected. They certainly didn't used to.
Probably still buy KMC though.
