genesis fortitude adv fork clearance

Post by Dr Nick »

Anyone know what size tyre (and on what width rim) will comfortably fit into standard Genesis fortitude adventure forks?
just wondering how fat/ plus I can go without having to change the forks..
cheers

I'm not home for a day or so to say for sure but pretty sure a 2.4 on 35mm rim fits the fork I have in the garage. The 2.8 panaracers should fit?

Hi Nick, what's the clear space between the fork legs? We know that a 2.4" will fit ok (edit after post above - my 2.4 fitted neatly when tried at the WRT). My Ogre is around 95mm clear and I've seen a 3" tyre in with a little room to spare (not sure on rim width though). Wouldn't like it with the sticky mud around here though - things would grind to a halt pretty quickly.

Slight hijack - would the 2.4 be better suited to a wider rim than the 19mm ones on there now?

thanks both. I'll check the measurement when home this evening.

When funds allow I plan to build up a dyno hub'd front wheel probably with a Velocity blunt 35mm rim, and build the Alfine rear hub into a matching rim...

mud clearance is in the back on my mind too...

alternative forks are of course an option, but then the costs start to mount up...

I run Conti X-King 2.4 on the original rims both ends on my Fortitude with plenty of clearance...

Wider rims will probably make the tyre fill out a bit.

I did "shoehorn" a rear wheel and tyre from a 2016 Longitude in the other day at my friendly LBS. Amazingly it fitted and I could even turn the cranks in the work stand. However, the clearance was so minimal that it would never work in the real world; i.e. riding it!

According to Genesis bikes, the Longitude uses 650b 38mm rims and 2.8" tyres....

Just looked up the fork drawing .. the amount of stuff I have filed on this laptop. 80mm clearance at a point 45mm below the underside of the crown. Axle to underside of crown is 406mm.

A mate has a fortitude, he's running velocity blunts with a 3" chronicle without any problems. He's also squeezed a 3" in the rear with a small amount of cold pressing the stays (albeit the rear comes in around 2.8").

Thanks all.

@jameso: that's very useful.
@rufus748 does your mate ride through gloopy mud ok with no clogging problems?

Cheers,
Nick

On the front, yes no problems. Space on the rear is somewhat 'at a premium'. No issues recently on the WRT however on a local ride that was more like clay it seized up. However, so did my Rooster and 99% of the other the riders taking part.

I have a Fortitude Adventure, rebuilt the wheels with 35mm rims and run a conti X king 2.4 at the back and a Panaracer 3.0 fat be nimble at the front (which is actually a 2.8). I can measure clearances tonight if it's useful.

On the front there is ~8mm each side, on the rear 10mm.

I get the 2.4 tyre on the 35mm run at 58mm and the 2.8 at 73mm

Meant to say, I'm very pleased running the bigger tyres on it. It makes me smile!
