Thermos / Flask that fits in a bottle cage?

Post by FLV »

Is there such a thing? One that wouldn't pop out on the rocky stuff?

Basically I am lucky enough to work from home a day or sometime more a week. This means I can take an hours lunch break and go for a ride. Its 50/50 road nice trails and it would be nice sometimes to take 5 minutes with a brew.

I know I could take a meths stove etc, but that would turn into 15 minutes to have a brew.

I suppose you'd need to find the external diameter of the flask and get one that is close to that of a water bottle. The small flasks tend to be too thin and the larger flasks too wide. I haven't checked the B2B flask though, which seems a little wider than most small flasks. There might be an issue with the metal outer of the flask and the metal of the cage as most water bottles are plastic so there's a bit more friction metal-plastic than metal-metal.

Trail 42 do one that's a perfect fit. My mates has been fine, mine stopped working after not much use (wasn't dropped, put in dishwasher, etc). When working it'd keep a coffee decently warm for at least 40 mins, probably longer but wouldn't know as that's how long my commute is!

My cage is plastic.

I dont want a monki cage as I want to use my normal bottle cage without the strap etc most of the time. Good Idea though

The BB flask is a touch too small.

Dave have a look at the Klean Kanteen range, good stuff although not cheap.

You could bend the top part of the bottle cage inward so that you get a fit. Might need to wrap some tape around it as well to improve the friction between it and the flask.

Trail 42 flask is a touch too small in diameter but a couple of wraps of insulating tape/duct tape/helicopter tape would make it a snug fit.

A Lifeventure thermo mug fits tight in an old chopped off water bottle. They had a deal on the mugs in Cotswolds recently. I am sure that the extra layer of plastic must help as on a cold day you are running an efficient heat exchanger on your down tube !

+1 for the lifeventure mug. Brilliant piece of kit. Have used them for 10 years at least. Perfect fit in a chopped of bottle, snug and tight. As I'm still in the service I use them a lot, hot days, cold days..Everyday. When biking, I make my morning coffee, and make some more for the thermo. Unless very cold (like today -16), it will hold the coffee warm until noon. Not standard issue in my army, but I think every soldier have at least one (perfect fit for ammo pouch :-bd )

Bought one of these last year for my brother. appears to be great and is designed purely for bottle cages. Think I saw a photo of Cavendish using one for tea on a training ride not so long ago.

Bought the OH the trail42 for Christmas, she has been using it in a bottle cage succesfully (although some of the paint is scraping off ). She also likes it enough she's started taking it with her when travelling for work.

I'm jealous, I may buy one....

an elastic strap or something might finish off the puzzle to stop the flask self ejecting.

I have one made by biologic that fits in a cage. Fine for road and easy trails but jumps out on rough ground.

As others have said a screw top mini flask in a pocket or small bag will work well

There's also the JavaCage if you want a bit more security (back to using a rubber strap though)

I've ordered one of these

http://www.outdoorgb.com/p/Klean_Kantee ... tem=675132

The stated diameter is the same as a water bottle, Just hope the ridge is in the right place.

Thanks very much for all the suggestions. I'll report back on my choice when it arrives.

I have a trail 42. In a metal cage it can be a bit rattely. A bit of electrical tape on the cage and it is all good.

Not a huge volume, but I can't really fault it.
