but i also fancy doing some big hills on it. had a big bouncy specialized enduro, which was fantastic on lakeland descents, but i could not get on with the suspension anywhere else. i thought the extra that the big tyres on a fatty give you might be good on some rocky lakes stuff.

oh and it is a on one trail. we will see.

On hols up your way last week, mine had a good outing around the tight singletrack around Carrbridge, and Bike Glenlivet.
I then took it round the inner part of the Cairngorm Loop.

I thought it was pretty spot on the the CL, and a while not the number one choice for tight singletrack/ built trails, it was still a lot of fun.

I'm a fan!

Am about to head up the final lift of the season (they opened for half term and close tomorrow) and what bike am I taking?

The bouncy and long travel ht are both sitting in the garage and I'll be hitting some serious alpine tech singletrack in my new fully rigid 29+ monster - it ploughs through anything faster than everything else.

i did inner CL on mine on tuesday -and can only echo ian -it was a hoot even loaded up through the centre. a majority of what was a push on my 2.35 shod Rigid bike was ridable on my 35lb fatty.

had a test ride on a friends on one fatty last night.........order cancelled. not for me I am afraid.

How come? Wasn't upto what you expected? Or just didn't "feel" right?

My personal dilemma lies not only in whether to go fat, but that of the 2 I've ridden, one felt vaguely exciting (a custom Ritchey) and the other felt all wrong (Cannondale prototype)
Parts were the same but I guess Geometry plays a huge part

bloke is about 15 stone, so we added some more air in the tyres. 18 psi. sat on the saddle and set off and it just squirmed about under me, so added another 5 psi. felt a bit better, but it felt like trying to pedal my old 50lb ebike without using the power.
took is down a rabbit run downhill, over some roots and down a few steps and it felt great, if a bit bouncy. got to the bottom and turned round. ended up in the granny ring far sooner than I would have been on my 29er. got to the roots, and the rear tyre just slid sideways. may have been the tyre pressure.

just felt very sluggish/slow/hard work.

I'm 12.5 stone and run 8psi max with the Oofatty and 5-6psi on the moonlander. 18psi is missing the point a bit!

Apart from the tyre pressures (but I'm only just 11 stone), I couldn't agree more Tony ... they're the very best bike for the job sometimes and at others, the very worst. Sadly, for me that leaves them feeling like a toy rather than a viable way of getting from A to B unless I can be certain of the conditions I'm likely to encounter.

I have the luxury of living near the coast and some lovely beaches, riding down sand dunes is a weird experience the first time you do it. Added to that if we ever get snow it's fantastic.

Apart from that I'm afraid I use my "normal" bike but that could be more down to fitness than ability...

Fair point I guess, did you try it before pumping it up a bit harder?

There's the Stans formula for determining the starting point for pressures when running tubeless (weight in stone * 2 then subtract 1psi for front, add 2psi for rear) but is there anything similar for fat bike tyres or is it just pick a pressure and see how you go? Given how low they typically run, just 1psi is quite a difference.
