Because of where my bottle cage is at the moment, the top of my bottle pushes up on my frame bag and limits the amount of stuff I can put in there (and also limits me to a pretty small frame bag). I've got space further down my down tube without getting in the way of the pedals / chain... but I've got no idea if there are any bottle cages out there that would bolt further up but extend downwards.

I could also put the bottle cage under the down tube... but I'm not sure where to go about getting one of those either (I don't want to be drilling holes in my frame).

Yes you can. I forget what they are sold as but basically they are a bar with two sets of holes: one to fix to the existing bosses and the other set for the cage to be fixed to.

I asked about something similar about a month ago but a lot has passed between my ears since then so can't remember!

Mount Skidmore do their Bottle Cage Adapter. I might have one spare if I can find it - think it cost me about £8 when they were on sale a few months back.

Would that hold up to serious off road though? I'd be waiting for them to either slip off or obliterate themselves.

There's a couple of recent threats on this exact thing. But the stock answers are mount skidmore brackets or the elite bottle cage bosses (like a giant screw tightened zip tie)

And yes both will stand up to off road abuse. I've put 7,000km on a set of the elite ones with no problems

Ive just bought 2 sets of these to mount some extra bottle cages to my forks :)
Seem to work ok

And the advantage over the mount skidmore system is they can go lower down, further away from the fixed bosses. Or as stumpy says on your forks!

I have the mount skidmore adaptors and the elite bottle cage mounts

They both work fine, the mounts are cheaper but the adaptions look neater

I use the mounts to create an extra bottle cage mount, whereas I use the adaptors to move an existing mount

The adaptions push the bottle away from the bosses ever so slightly, so might take up a smudge more room once the bottles are in

The bottles then sit more off centre and avoid the tangle bag

You have given me an idea!

I have a salsa fork but it only has one mount, so I have also used a plumbers clamp (or whatever's it's called) to secure a gorilla cage mount.

But this means the mount is fixed in position and u have to keep on removing the straps.

So I've bought some halfords bottle cage mounts and I am going to see if I can mount the monkey cage rings to them and then mount the cage with straps onto it.
This will allow me to take off and put on the gorilla cage with ease.

Now I can remove the gorilla cage as a quick release rather than it being fixed in place. It seems as sturdy as how I had it set up initially.

Just did mine ready for a ride tomorrow. Have it under the bar (surprisingly hard to line up properly) so I have the option of adding another at some point above the bar. Worked well as far as I can tell, though I seem to have stripped one of the bolts that came with it trying to tighten the cage up nice and tight.

One problem I only just realised... I'll need to take the cage off to use my bike rack, as that's where the arm grabs the frame. Not the end of the world though. Also, I couldn't use the big bottle that I had as the top of hit would get hit if I used any significant amount of suspension. Not the end of the world though.

Double barrelled bottles... bit of a mash up between and the elite clips and the double mount idea.
Not problem with knocking knees if seated. I very rarely stand so that's fine but not much good it you do a lot of standing.
Got a four day ride coming up on Saturday so I'll see if they p'ed me off and I've ripped them by the end or not.

that looks like a good system, although the cages you've got there look like they have a bit too open sided to keep the bottles in.

i like the idea a lot. you can get pair of these - http://www.lezyne.com/product-botcg-flo ... hw1HBFViko - side entry cages which would mean there would be support under the bottle. they are sold as opposite pairs

do let us know how you get on though as I'd be interested in looking into that myself.

bit of rubber and a pair of big jubalee clips.....More solid than a solid thing. bottle stayed in well and was easy to access while doing a skye to montrose coast to coast.



Top tube mounted bottle no bother. and the pumps mounted under the downtube on some zip ties.....

I've got an additional fitting on my Wildcat frame bag that'll hold a bottle in that ^ position ... works very well.

The shimano di2 mount can be used to move your bottle cage down.
