So, having finally learned to ride clipped in by riding cheap commuting shoes for the Capital Trail, I very definitely need some new clippless shoes. They need to be stiff, light, grippy and easy to walk in. Oh and id like the moon on a stick whilst you're at it!

Must admit though, I still prefer flats on very muddy routes and trails where I prefer the ability to get my foot off instantly when things go sideways.

Although some one off here was rather unlucky with some Mavic Alpine XL (XL not being size) I can recommend the Mavic Alpine. On my second set now and find the balance of stiffness and 'walkability' great. I need mine half a size bigger then what I usually wear. I do give them a good trashing and besides the downsides of all cleat shoes (hole in the sole, cleat) they're great. Dry fast as well once you swap the spongy innersole. Girlfriend has them too and seems happy.

I'm on my 2nd pair of Giro Junctions which can be found on ebay for under £50.

Not particularly stiff, but imho you don't want a stiff shoe.

I've always had Shimano shoes but have given Giro a whirl and like them. They are a touch more snug for the "same size" but not so much I'd have needed to go up a size. The Giro Carbide can be found for about 40-50 quid if you look around and the 3 velcro straps have worked really well despite not having a buckle. I did ruin them a bit as they were used as brakes for about 150 miles so I've got some Terraduros that are even nicer. I found the best price was looking on Amazon.de

+1 for the Terraduro's, got mine locally for about £100. Did 1.5-2hrs h-a-b on a ride last Sat & hardly noticed them..
Had some Mavic Scree before which were a really good riding shoe but the tread on the bottom was too aggressive for walking over rocky ground & eventually the tread got ripped off. If there was a shoe with a Mavic upper & a Terraduro sole it'd be a great shoe..

I have always used Shimano for MTB (touring). Currently using Shimano MT60. I have found them excellent shoe - nice and stiff and waterproof.

I have found thta Shimano MTB shoes can be very weird and sometimes size small and narrow. I have never had the same problem with Shimano road shoes though

Hmm, has anybody tried the Northwave escape? They look like they fit the bill and can be had cheap (unless you have big feet like me).

If you're not in a rush Ben it's worth keeping an eye out on fleabay, pinkbike etc, know of a couple of people who've picked up some shoe bargains, not like Stu's , but mtb ones that peeps have only ridden a couple of times but don't get on with them so sell them on..

There's some (almost) half price size 8 Giro VR90's on Pinkbike atm if anyone is interested..

I have some Specialised Tahoes for touring, really comfortable and good to HAB in. Lace and a Velcro strap.

I mainly use shimano mt 91's as when I'm walking a like some ankle support plus I get terribly cold feet so like the goretex liner. In winter I use Northwave arctic goretex but the rigid soles are horrible to walk over rocky ground in. Just bought some shimano mt34's which seem light have a reasonable amount of flex without being floppy and should do for dry rides.

if you go for Giro shoes size up.

Shimano MT71's but they are out of your current budget
