Carbon pegs

Post by polarcherry »

Stu - do you reckon you could make a UK equivalent these?

Your carbon poles look properly strong enough for it

Possibly, I'll have a play. The bonding of the tips will be the weak point but I might have an idea that negates it

Carbon isn't well known for it's abrasion resistance...

Be interested to see what you cone up with.

The way I see it doesn't really need to be, as the aluminium tip will take the brunt of any rocks.

I use Easton nano pegs and they are similar hollow aluminium tube with solid machined point and they are very tough.

The peg will only go in and out of the ground once every 24 hours* Zippy. Yes, it'll scratch but I don't think that'll produce enough wear to cause any issues.

*In most cases.

I gave it a little bit more thought. I've seen carbon fibre used in far harsher environments and they're fine for that. I suspect even lots of use at Strathpuffer (i.e. Mica in the soil) and they'd be fine. :geek:

Sorry for the long delay in sorting something, finding carbon up to the task took a little doing. Anyway, 150mm long 'nail', 6g and so far seems pretty much unbreakable. Testing begins next week.

Looks cool and a similar eight to my Ruta pegs.

What's the spike made from and what diameter carbon?

Def. interested in this....

These are 6mm O/D

Now, my issue with carbon pegs has always been the tips falling off or remaining stuck in the ground when you remove the peg. Obviously you need to bond a tip onto the carbon tube and it'll always be a weak point, there isn't much surface area unless you make the tip very long and that makes things heavy.

In an effort to negate the 'tip issue' these don't have any ... because they're one piece, made from carbon rod.

Interesting. Reckon they'll pull much in sandy ground?

I think 6mm O/D @ 150mm long might not be the most secure but if you increased the length or diameter (maybe 8mm), I think they'll hold well.

Thread resurrection...

Is the dyneema on the peg reflective at all? I've a habit of losing pegs in heather and at £3 a pop anything that helps me retrieve them would be good

If not, I'll just order up some cord.

This might be a bit 'moon on a stick' but would it be possible to notch these so they 'catch'/'hold' the guy line at the top?

(clearly putting them into the ground at the 'correct' angle negates this but sometimes the ground isn't that forgiving)

I'll try one Ben but obviously any notch or cut is a potential stress raiser ... something carbon doesn't like.
