Making a stove that works well is really only half the story, once you add a windshield everything can change. Something that appears to burn really well can become almost useless if it's surrounded by a windshield that doesn't suit. Trouble is, it's very difficult to gauge what's going on beneath the windshield, flame size and spread, flame distortion and pattern are all affected by the windshield. Obviously you've got boil times to go off but they don't always show the true picture ... so I've made a windshield 'testing bicycle' which lets me see exactly what's going on under there

EDIT: Just to keep you going, here's a couple of pics of an 8g. Top pic shows it having just bloomed - all very messy but usually the last thing you see before sticking your mug on (but obviously from the top). Bottom pic shows what actually goes on underneath with a 450ml mug in place. Slightly wider flame spread on the right hand side is caused by a wider gap between the mug and windshield on that side, drawing the flame base in that direction. Colour of flame would indicate a good burn and very little 'wasted' fuel.
