Book recommendation
Looking for a book to take on a short break (without the bike!). I really enjoyed Paul Howard's Two Wheels on my Wagon.
So, anything similar?
Straining my memory I recall early issues of MBUK carrying adventures by Roman Dial, etc. Plus my early interest in mtbing was back in the day's of the Cranes taking
Raleigh Mavericks up Snowdon and Saracens up Kilimanjaro!
Hopefully that gives an idea of what sort of read I'm hunting for.
Thanks.

An old Robert Louis Stevenson book 'Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes' is pretty good - no bike, but he does have a fur lined bivi bag!

Thanks for all the replies.
I've ordered the John Metcalfe 'Dividing the Great' - they all appealed in one way or another but for some reason that one captured my attention (I was using Amazon to to 'see inside' some of them, etc) so look forward to reading it.
Thanks again.

Re: Book recommendation
I enjoyed John Metcalfe, but found Jill Homer a bit hard going as the first chapter was all about a messy break up.Solo wrote:Thanks for all the replies.

It's not about bikes, but I found Jonny Muir's 'Isles at the Edge of the Sea' a good read, it's about his trip backpacking around the islands off the west coast of Scotland.

Re: Book recommendation
I read the John Metcalf one some time ago, he rode it around 2003 so outdated from a racing view. A nice read though.
Enjoyed Jill Homer's as well. She was dumped on her way to the start;-)
Currently reading Jill's latest book about Tim Hewitt's eight (or is it 9) runs across the Iditarod trail. More general adventure then cycling but Alan Sheldon gets a name check:

For anybody who is intrigued about Alaska and wants to read a novel I can highly recommend Ordinary Wolves by Seth Kantner. One of my favourite books of the last few years.

One Man and His Bike by Mike Carter - really enjoyed reading it. I'm not a big reader but this was a pleasure to read. It has humour, adventure and thought provoking stuff in it.

Way off topic but if you're interested in climbing I can thoroughly recommend Johnny Dawes' book - Full of Myself. Completely bonkers, just like the man himself.

Just started "The idle traveller" by Dan Keiran.
Not about riding but about a more laid back approach to travelling
It's good so far
