It's not what you think. It's a bike ride loosely following the Solent Way.

Never seen knickers hanging from a fence but I have seen dead moles hanging from them but not for a while. Do farmers still employ mole catchers and if so, why? Beautiful creatures when seen up close, i'm always amazed at how burrowing animals keep their fur dirt free.

Haven't seen this job title anywhere?

There's a sheep pen / barn high up in the mountains. Still gets used for gathering and shearing a few times a year but otherwise it stands idle ... it makes a good rest stop out of the weather but I've always wondered what the story is behind the thong hung on one of the hurdles

I'm sure you have a vivid enough imagination to create your own story. I have to say, I made up a story in my head about the dirty black knickers on the fence, but that is fiction.

Was riding round Nercwys Forest (Clwyds) on Friday and saw about 8 moles hooked onto a barb-wire fence.
Shame but I guess a pest is a pest

Perhaps in the same way that hanging dead moles on a fence wards off other moles, hanging used knickers on fences is supposed to ward off other loose women

There's a fence in Whitfield on the way up to Alston I drive past once a fortnight, always has something like 20 moles hanging from it

I don't think they hang them up to ward off other moles, more to show off their prowess as a mole catcher. Maybe hanging the knickers up is sort of the same, bit like carving notches on your bed post
.

Hmm! Perhaps it's a sign there are loose men about?

Australians have a lot to answer for* including saying "mole" when they mean to say "moll", which is only funny in the context of this thread

I found a very strange tree when I was in Brazil, it's called the Brazilian Thong Tree (for you that expected to see more knickers, there is a picture). The story about that day is here - it involves a boat and many other things but there are no bicycles.
